Lilliam Rivera Books in Order

Lilliam Rivera was born in the Bronx, New York, and grew up there in the late 1980s in the housing projects, as part of a Puerto Rican family. The Bronx shows up again and again in her work, not as wallpaper, but as a real place full of pressure, pride, slang, and young people trying to figure out who they are.

She came to fiction by way of journalism.

An English teacher spotted something in her writing and pushed her onto the high school newspaper. From there she followed the magazine world, landing an internship at Rolling Stone and later working at Latina. In college, finding writers who sounded closer to the world she knew helped make fiction feel possible. That training stuck. Rivera writes with a reporter's eye for detail and a journalist's comfort with deadlines.

The turn toward novels came when one of the magazines where she worked folded. Instead of waiting for the next newsroom job, she used the break to write fiction, finishing a draft in about ninety days. After a lot of rewriting, that manuscript became The Education of Margot Sanchez, her 2017 debut, a sharp Bronx coming-of-age story about class, family, image, and the gap between who a teen is and who she thinks she has to be.

Rivera did not stay in one lane. Dealing in Dreams takes her interest in power and belonging into a future Mega City ruled by brutal hierarchies, while Never Look Back brings the Orpheus and Eurydice myth to the Bronx through a love story shaped by Hurricane Maria, grief, and a haunting spirit. We Light Up the Sky moves to Los Angeles and turns an alien invasion into a story about teenagers already living with loss, poverty, and systems that fail them.

Pressure is one of her favorite tools.

Whether she is writing realism, science fiction, myth, or horror, Rivera keeps returning to similar questions. What does home mean when the world keeps shifting under you? What do family and chosen family ask of each other? How do young people protect themselves without hardening completely? Her graphic novel Unearthed brings those concerns into Jessica Cruz's story, mixing immigration anxiety, family loyalty, and inner fear with superhero energy.

She also knows how to change gears. Rivera wrote the middle grade Goldie Vance novels, which swap apocalypse and myth for hotel mysteries, quick clues, and a bright, playful sleuthing rhythm. Then with Tiny Threads, her first adult novel, she moved into supernatural suspense, using the fashion world to tell a darker story about ambition, glamour, grief, and what gets hidden inside a dream job.

The recognition followed in plain view. Rivera is a Pushcart Prize winner, a MacDowell Fellow, and a Clarion alum, and her work has also received a Pura Belpré Honor. Those notes matter, but they only explain part of the appeal. Readers often come for the high-concept hooks, then stay for the voice, the city feeling, and the way her characters are allowed to be messy, stubborn, scared, and brave at the same time.

Rivera now lives in Los Angeles and serves on the faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno. Even as her books range from the Bronx to imagined futures to haunted California glamour, they keep one thing steady, the sense that young people from the margins deserve stories as big, strange, and alive as anybody else's.
