Unsure what follows military service, Jack accepts work on a deep-space salvage and exploration ship. Its small crew of accomplished older women offers both professional adventure and unexpected romantic attention, transforming his attempt to find a new direction.

Jack and the crew reach an uncharted frontier world to refurbish an abandoned outpost. Work and exploration bring hazards alongside their shared leisure, while his developing connection with the reserved Maureen adds another complication to life on the expedition.

While completing contracts in a frontier planet’s desert region, Jack grows closer to former soldier Elizabeth. Her willingness to reveal more of herself deepens their relationship, even as work in the dangerous wilderness continues to demand their attention.

Uncertain about his future and his relationship with Elizabeth, Jack accepts another set of contracts in the planet’s frozen north. Sharing a shuttle with her and Lyra brings greater intimacy while the new assignments prove more demanding than expected.
