Series background & context

The Liam Dempsey books are dark, hard driving crime thrillers built around a man who is already cracked open before the case even starts. Liam is a former homicide detective, and when we meet him he is carrying grief, guilt, and the kind of damage that has left him thinking about death more than the future. Then his brother is murdered, and he gets dragged back toward the work he thought was over. That combination, personal ruin plus violent investigation, gives the series its shape.

The setting matters a lot. These books live in small Midwestern communities, river towns, local departments, and tight circles where everybody knows something and nobody tells the whole truth. The Mississippi River and northern landscapes give the stories a cold, isolated feel, but the real menace comes from people, not from the weather. Hart uses local politics, buried grudges, and family history to keep the pressure close and personal.

They are thrillers with a horror chill, not supernatural mysteries.

The River Is Dark throws Liam into the aftermath of brutal killings in a town along the Mississippi, where he is both grieving brother and possible suspect. The Night is Deep shows what happens after that damage does not simply disappear. Liam is trying to move on, building something like a life, when another savage case pulls him back in. This time the investigation starts with an attack, a kidnapping, and ransom demands, then turns into something bloodier and more tangled than it first appears.

What links the books is not just the lead character, but the cost of staying involved. Liam keeps chasing truth even when it reopens old wounds, strains the little stability he has, and pushes him toward people who would rather kill than be exposed. He is good at the work, but Hart never treats that as glamorous. These are stories about a man trying to do the right thing while carrying trauma that shapes how he sees every room, every witness, and every threat.

If you like bruised investigators, grim atmosphere, and cases that hit the protagonist where he lives, this series lands well. Read it in order. Liam's inner life is as important as the crimes, and the second book hits harder because the first one has already shown what solving a case can cost him.
