Series background & context
Level: Unknown is the outlier in Dalglish's catalog, and that is part of the appeal. It blends spacefaring science fiction with isekai and LitRPG fantasy, sending a research cadet named Nick into the world of Yensere whenever he falls asleep. One foot stays in a fragile human future. The other drops into a realm of levels, monsters, magic, and old empires.
The setup is messy in a good way. An ancient artifact may hold the key to saving humanity from a coming apocalypse, and Nick has been chosen to explore the world contained inside it. The catch is that Yensere does not welcome him. He is treated as a demonic threat, killed often, and thrown back into the real world only until sleep drags him in again.
Dying is basically part of the training plan.
As the series moves through Level: Unknown, Level: Ascension, and Level: Apocalypse, the cast grows and the stakes split in two directions. Inside Yensere, Nick gathers allies, builds power, and pushes toward a confrontation with God-King Vaan. Outside the artifact, his brother Simon and others are dealing with fear, politics, cult behavior, and the approach of something terrible through a black sun portal. That two-world structure keeps the books from feeling like pure game grind.
Dalglish clearly enjoys the genre tools here. There are levels, party-building, strange abilities, boss-style threats, and even an AI-like guide helping frame the adventure. But the series also keeps one eye on the cost of power. Nick wants to save both worlds, yet every step forward pulls him deeper into Yensere's rules, wars, and expectations. That is where the tension lives.
It is faster and more playful than some of his darker fantasy, but it still likes pressure.
If you want progression fantasy with a clear game-system backbone and a sci-fi shell around the magic, this is the place to go. The books deliver the satisfaction of leveling up, but they also remember that numbers alone are not enough. Nick is trying to survive, grow stronger, and keep two collapsing realities from taking each other down with them.
