Author bio

Lenora Bell grew up in Haines, Alaska, a small town with no movie theater or traffic lights, but with a library that mattered a great deal. Long, dark winters gave her plenty of reading time. She moved from writers such as Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Louisa May Alcott, Virginia Woolf, and Anaïs Nin into the world of romance.

The book that made romance feel like a possible writing life was Eloisa James's Potent Pleasures. Bell has said she read it in 2005 and finished it in one night. After that, she began imagining historical romances with her own name on the cover, shelved in the library back home.

It took a while to get there.

Bell wrote early drafts, entered an online writing contest, and found a community of other historical-romance writers. She later earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Portland State University. Teaching English took her far from Alaska, and she lived and worked across five continents, including time in Bolivia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, France, and Australia.

Travel did not end the writing habit. Bell has described carrying story ideas with her and jotting romance plots on grocery receipts and cocktail napkins while moving from place to place. Her characters may inhabit Regency England, but that restless curiosity shows up in women who want careers, adventures, and room to make their own choices.

Her breakthrough came with a manuscript called Charlene and the Duchess Factory, which won the 2014 Golden Heart Award for historical romance. That story became her debut, How the Duke Was Won. It introduces Charlene Beckett, a determined young woman posing as her aristocratic half-sister, and James, Duke of Harland, a reluctant duke looking for a practical bride. The book launched the three-volume Disgraceful Dukes series.

Bell's later books keep the Regency setting but move through different kinds of romantic trouble. If I Only Had a Duke pairs a would-be beekeeper with a duke pursuing a family mystery. For the Duke's Eyes Only sends an archaeologist and her former friend after a stolen artifact. In Love Is a Rogue, a woman trying to finish an etymological dictionary finds her plans disrupted by a carpenter working at her brother's Cornwall estate.

The common thread is a heroine with a project of her own. Bell writes women who want to run vineyards, compose music, study ancient history, publish books, or simply decide whom to love. Her dukes and rogues tend to arrive with money, titles, secrets, or old damage, then have to learn that partnership means taking a woman's ambitions seriously.

Her work also makes room for playful setups, sharp disagreements, and a little danger alongside the romance. A fake identity, a marriage bargain, a museum theft, or a family debt can bring a couple together. What keeps them there is usually the slow realization that neither person has to give up the life they want in order to be loved.
