Series background & context
Legends of Gilia is a 15-book epic fantasy series about a man trying to recover his past while the world around him slides toward war. It begins in Sword of Ruyn with Ealrin Bealouve, the lone survivor of a shipwreck. He washes ashore with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he was at sea. What he does find is Ruyn, a land where humans, elves, and dwarves live beside one another under a peace that is starting to break apart.
Ealrin's search quickly becomes more than a private mystery. General Holve takes him in, and Ealrin meets Blume, a young mage whose family carries secrets of its own. Rumors, fear, and open bigotry are pushing the continent toward violence, so the group has to decide whether to keep chasing Ealrin's lost history or help prevent disaster.
Neither choice stays simple for long.
The series is structured as a long journey through several regions of Gilia. The opening Ruyn books deal with a growing war and the threat hanging over the continent. In the Irradan books, Ealrin and Blume seek a legendary tree that may restore Blume's magic, while they cross a land divided by imperial ambition, rebellion, and competing elven clans.
The next stretch moves to the island lands of Ladis. There, the companions encounter a severe theocracy, hostile armies, dangerous secrets, and a growing demonic threat. The setting matters in every arc. New countries have their own rules, old grudges, and reasons to distrust the travelers who arrive with trouble close behind them.
By the Redact books, Ealrin is finally nearing the land he believes was once his home. His missing memories and his family name become central again, but Redact is held together by fragile political agreements and ancient magic. The Galin books bring the series toward its largest stakes, as Ealrin's friends are separated and the fate of the wider world comes into question.
This is a road-trip-style epic with swords, magic, elves, dwarves, goblins, pirates, rival armies, and demons. It also keeps returning to trust. Ealrin does not know whether his former self deserves to be remembered. Blume has to learn what her power means. Holve's guidance is valuable, but it is not always easy to accept.
Start with Sword of Ruyn and read in publication order. The books build directly on one another, especially in the relationships between Ealrin, Blume, Holve, and their growing circle of companions. Readers who enjoy a long quest, shifting alliances, and a new fantasy region every few books will find the series most rewarding as one continuous journey.
