Author bio
Lee Strobel built his early career on hard facts and skepticism. Born in Arlington Heights, Illinois, he earned a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and a Master of Studies in Law from Yale Law School. He spent fourteen years as an award-winning journalist for the Chicago Tribune, where he worked as a legal editor and investigative reporter. During this time, he described himself as a committed atheist, trusting only what he could see, touch, and prove.
His life took a sharp turn in the early 1980s when his wife, Leslie, converted to Christianity. Strobel was initially dismayed by the change and feared it would ruin their marriage. Relying on his background in law and journalism, he decided to launch an all-out investigation into the claims of Christianity, intending to debunk them once and for all. He spent nearly two years interviewing scholars, analyzing ancient documents, and studying archaeology with the scrutiny he would apply to a major court case.
The results of that investigation surprised him. On November 8, 1981, concluding that the evidence for Jesus—and specifically the Resurrection—was far stronger than he had imagined, he became a Christian. This journey from skepticism to faith became the foundation for his writing career and ministry. He eventually left the newspaper business to become a teaching pastor, serving at major congregations like Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois and Saddleback Church in California.
Strobel is best known for his "Case" series of apologetics books, most notably The Case for Christ. In these books, he adopts the persona of an interviewer, traveling to speak with experts in fields like astrophysics, history, and medicine to tackle tough questions about God and the Bible. His work often addresses specific barriers to faith, such as the existence of evil, the reliability of the Gospels, and the conflict between science and religion.
Beyond nonfiction, Strobel has also written fiction, including the legal thriller The Ambition. His bibliography extends to daily devotionals and books on evangelism, often co-authored with colleagues like Mark Mittelberg. He has also adapted many of his core arguments into editions for children and students, aiming to help younger readers understand the reasons behind their beliefs.
Today, Strobel continues to write and speak about apologetics and spiritual skepticism. He serves as the founding director of the Lee Strobel Center for Evangelism and Applied Apologetics at Colorado Christian University. He and Leslie have been married for over fifty years and live in Texas.
