Lethal

by Sandra Brown

2011

Honor Gillette helps a sick man on her property, then learns he is Lee Coburn, accused of a brutal multi-murder. With her daughter at risk, Honor is forced on the run, and the truth about her late husband starts unraveling.

Series background & context

Lee Coburn doesn't show up in a long shelf of sequels. This is a compact set of stories that use one driven character to pull you straight into trouble, then refuse to let up. If you like suspense that starts with a knock on the door and spirals into a chase, this little corner of the backlist delivers.

It starts with Lethal, where Honor Gillette thinks she's doing the right thing by checking on a sick man in her yard. The stranger is Lee Coburn, wanted for a shocking crime, and he's armed, injured, and out of time. He swears Honor and her young daughter will be safe if Honor does exactly what he says, but that promise comes with a price, Coburn believes Honor's late husband left behind something valuable, and he's there to get it.

Coburn isn't built like a comforting hero. He's blunt, suspicious, and willing to push past the rules, especially when the clock is running down. At the same time, he draws a line, and watching where he refuses to cross it is part of the tension. Even when he's the most wanted man in the room, he keeps an eye on who might get hurt.

Nobody gets to stay neutral for long.

The series runs on manhunts, hidden motives, and the creeping realization that the people who look safest can be the most dangerous. It moves through back roads, split-second decisions, and conversations where one wrong answer gets someone hurt. The romance grows in the middle of fear, not after it's over, and the story keeps asking the same question: when you've got no good options, what does a decent choice even look like?

Honor & ... is a shorter crossover story written with C.J. Box that drops Coburn into a new kind of pressure cooker. A meeting in the wilderness turns into a life-or-death problem, and Coburn is forced to team up with another determined lawman who has his own code and his own stakes. It's lean, tense, and built around survival choices, quick judgments, and the challenge of trusting someone you've only just met.

Start with Lethal for the full setup and emotional payoff, then read Honor & ... as a sharp, fast aftershock.
