Author bio
Laurie Halse Anderson was born on October 23, 1961, in Potsdam, New York. She grew up in several small towns in northern and central New York, with Syracuse feeling like the big city. Books, history, geography, and other cultures were early interests.
As a teenager, Anderson spent thirteen months in Denmark as an exchange student, living and working on a pig farm. The experience pushed her toward college when she returned to the United States. She earned an associate degree from Onondaga Community College, then completed a degree in languages and linguistics at Georgetown University in 1984.
Her route to writing was not neat or quick. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as a reporter and freelance journalist, and held a long list of other jobs, including bookstore work, warehouse work, bank cleaning, lifeguarding, and dairy-farm chores.
That mix of jobs gave her plenty to notice.
Anderson began publishing children’s books in 1996, starting with Ndito Runs, a picture book about a Kenyan girl who runs to school. Turkey Pox and No Time for Mother’s Day showed her lighter, family-centered side. She also wrote nonfiction for younger readers, including books that bring history and everyday life into focus.
Then came Speak in 1999. The novel follows Melinda Sordino, a high-school freshman isolated after calling the police at a party and unable to explain why. It became a National Book Award finalist and a Printz Honor Book, and its story later reached new readers through a film and a graphic novel adaptation.
Anderson often writes about young people trying to make sense of hard situations, whether that means trauma, family strain, illness, friendship, or the pressure to fit in. Wintergirls follows Lia as an eating disorder takes over her life after the death of her former best friend. In The Impossible Knife of Memory, Hayley tries to build an ordinary senior year while living with her father’s worsening PTSD. Her characters can be funny, defensive, stubborn, and scared, which is usually why they feel so real.
She also loves history. Fever 1793 places Mattie Cook in Philadelphia during a yellow fever epidemic, while the Seeds of America books, Chains, Forge, and Ashes, follow young people fighting for freedom during the Revolutionary War. These novels do not treat the past as tidy or simple. They make room for the people whose freedom was left out of the nation’s promises.
In 2019, Anderson published Shout, a memoir in verse about her own experience of sexual assault, the aftermath of silence, and the importance of listening to survivors. The book makes clear how personal experience, years of school visits, and readers’ stories shaped her work.
Anderson has received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for her contribution to young adult literature and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. She lives in Pennsylvania and continues to write, teach, speak with readers, and advocate for young people’s freedom to read.
