Lauren Pauling had already proven she could carry a thriller series, so it makes sense that Ames eventually gave her a line that belongs entirely to her. These books lean harder into the federal-investigator side of her character and push her toward darker, more psychological cases, especially serial-killer investigations and long-buried patterns that only show up if somebody refuses to stop looking.
A major difference here is tone. The Jack Reacher Cases are often built around action, missing persons, and conspiracies touching Reacher's orbit. The Lauren Pauling books are a little colder and more forensic. In Run Down the Devil, she faces a serial killer whose victims share a hidden link.
