Author bio

Lauren Blackwood writes fantasy that likes a little danger with its romance. She is a Jamaican American author living in Virginia, and her books mix folklore, horror, and love stories in ways that feel dark, vivid, and very human.

She has said she always loved writing, and she still remembers the picture book she wrote and illustrated in elementary school. Her teacher gave it an A+, which is the kind of early encouragement most writers would happily take.

Reading came first, but the book that pushed her to take writing seriously was Hawksong by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes.

In interviews, Blackwood has talked about loving romance, fantasy, and the big feelings of anime. Over time, she realized she wanted to write characters who looked like her and stories shaped by the cultures, fears, and desires she knew best. That choice helped define the work readers now know her for.

Her debut, Within These Wicked Walls, put her on a lot of radars fast. The novel takes the bones of Jane Eyre, moves them into an Ethiopian-inspired setting, and follows Andromeda, a young debtera, or exorcist, who takes a dangerous job in a cursed house. The book became a New York Times bestseller and a Reese's Book Club Fall 2021 YA Pick.

She did not stay in one mood or one landscape for long. Wildblood turns to Jamaican folklore and a jungle full of spirits and monsters, while The Dangerous Ones heads into the Civil War with vampires, vengeance, and a heroine who refuses to back down. Snow White: Fair & Sinister Heart shows another side of her range, sending Snow White into a gem-bright dream world that is much more dangerous than it looks.

Monsters show up often in Blackwood's books, but so do girls who bite back.

A lot of her stories begin with pressure. A haunted estate. A brutal employer. A war. A poisoned fairy tale. Then Blackwood places a young woman at the center of it all and lets her fight for room to live on her own terms. Her heroines can be angry, funny, frightened, stubborn, and tender, sometimes all in the same chapter, which is a big part of the appeal.

Her path to publication took time. She wrote multiple manuscripts, joined a mentorship program for marginalized writers, and signed with an agent in 2019. That long apprenticeship gave her room to sharpen what readers now expect from her, strong romantic tension, immersive settings, and stakes that feel personal even when the story is dealing with curses, gods, or bloodthirsty creatures.

These days, she still lives in Virginia. She has described herself as a musician, and in different short bios she has also mentioned tiramisu and powerlifting. She once joked that she was a New Yorker in Virginia wishing she were at Disney World, which feels like a pretty good summary of the energy she brings to the page.
