Series background & context
The Lauderdale series begins when Maren North receives an unexpected career change from her grandfather. Maren is a successful voice actress, not a private investigator, but her grandfather leaves her his neglected Fort Lauderdale investigations business and heads into retirement. Suddenly, she has an office, a pile of unanswered questions, and no clear idea how to do the job.
Her first move is to find help.
That help arrives in the form of Floyd James, a large, steady presence who knows the investigative world and is willing to show Maren how things work. Their partnership is practical from the start, but the cases they take on make the work personal fast. Maren is learning the rules while trying to decide what kind of investigator she wants to be, and Floyd is there to keep the situation from sliding fully off the rails.
The first case sounds straightforward until a client makes clear that she does not merely want an ex found. She wants him gone. That setup captures the series' approach: seemingly ordinary requests can reveal something much darker, and Maren has to learn when to trust a client, when to call for backup, and when her instincts are telling her the truth.
Fort Lauderdale gives the books a busy coastal setting full of neighborhoods, businesses, wealthy clients, and people in motion. It feels larger and more urban than Tarpon Cove, but it still has the warm weather, water, and unpredictable energy that run through Brown's Florida stories. Familiar characters from the Biscayne Bay books also appear, making the series feel connected without requiring readers to know every earlier adventure.
Maren is the key difference. She starts outside the detective world and has to earn her confidence case by case. Her voice-acting background gives her an unusual perspective, while her family connection to the agency means she cannot simply walk away when the business becomes more complicated than expected. The relationship between Maren and Floyd develops alongside the mysteries, with humor and mutual respect keeping the tone warm.
It is a fresh start with terrible timing.
Start with In Over Her Head for Maren's first day at the agency and the case that proves how quickly a favor can turn dangerous. On the Run, Stealing Hadley, and What Happens in Vegas continue the partnership with new clients, personal risks, and more reasons for Maren to wonder what her grandfather was thinking.
