Crystal Gardens

by Amanda Quick

2012

Series background & context

The Ladies of Lantern Street novels introduce Flint & Marsh, a discreet Victorian agency that provides paid companions with a twist. On the surface its employees are the sort of sober, reliable women families hire to chaperone daughters or smooth over awkward social situations. In reality, many of these ladies possess subtle psychic abilities and a talent for investigation.

Each book focuses on a different employee whose assignment turns into something far more dangerous than expected. In Crystal Gardens, Evangeline Ames has retreated to the countryside to recover from an attack tied to a recent case. When another would‑be killer breaks into her cottage, she flees to the eerie gardens on a neighboring estate, where the owner – a man with his own paranormal gift – is trying to understand why the grounds have become a nexus of strange energy.

The Mystery Woman follows Beatrice Lockwood, a paid companion whose true work involves tracking down fraudulent mediums and occult swindlers. After she helps foil a crime at a London ball, a former government agent with damaged psychic senses becomes convinced she is connected to a shadowy enemy from his past. Their hunt leads through mesmerist shows, blackmail schemes, and a killer known only as the Bone Man.

In Otherwise Engaged, Amity Doncaster survives an attack by a serial killer and later discovers that London society now sees her as scandalous. To protect both her reputation and his own secrets, a spy she once met abroad claims to be engaged to her. Together they try to unmask the killer while sorting out how much of their pretend betrothal is actually fake.

Across the series, Lantern Street serves as a quiet anchor. Its unseen proprietors choose clients carefully; its network of servants and informants feeds the heroines information that male investigators might never access. The books share a mood: gaslit streets, rumors of occult societies, heroines who are practical about their unusual gifts, and heroes who have to learn to trust women who refuse to sit quietly on the sidelines.

Readers who like historical romance with a brush of paranormal and a strong mystery spine will find these stories easy to drop into. Each stands alone, but small references and recurring side characters reward those who read all of the Lantern Street adventures.
