Author bio
Leighann Dobbs grew up in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and spent many years working in a very different world from the one her readers know now. Before the bakeries, bookstores, ghosts, cops, and suspicious small towns, she had a long career as a software engineer. She has also said she sold antiques on the side for years, which feels fitting once you notice how often old houses, heirlooms, and local history turn up in her fiction.
Then writing took over.
The shift happened after she was laid off from her engineering job. She moved into freelance website design, wrote nonfiction articles for websites, and published some nonfiction books. A friend encouraged her to try fiction, and that turned into the real turning point. She has described herself as a lifelong mystery reader, and once she wrote her first novel, she was hooked.
Her early fiction under her main name leans cozy, funny, and community-minded. Killer Cupcakes introduced baker Lexy Baker and helped set the tone for a lot of what followed: murder mixed with food, gossip, and a strong supporting cast. Readers who like small-town sleuthing, smart older side characters, and a little comic chaos tend to feel at home there very quickly.
She also has a clear love for paranormal mystery. In Dead Wrong and the Blackmoore books, family history, old houses, hidden relics, and unusual powers all play a part. In Ghostly Paws, former crime journalist Willa Chance heads back to Mystic Notch after a divorce and discovers she can see ghosts. That series, like a lot of Dobbs's work, mixes murder, animals, and just enough magic to keep things playful without losing the mystery.
She likes a mystery with company.
Under the name L.A. Dobbs, she writes in a tougher key. Telling Lies starts the Sam Mason books in White Rock, New Hampshire, where Chief Sam Mason, Sergeant Jo Harris, and Lucy the dog work cases in a town full of buried secrets. One Lie Too Many opens the Rockford Security series and shifts the mood to Las Vegas, bodyguard work, family loyalty, and faster suspense. Even when the tone changes, the through line is easy to spot: close communities, people with old baggage, and the slow unmasking of what everyone wishes would stay hidden.
Along the way, she became a USA Today bestselling author, but the day-to-day feel of her work stays grounded. Her stories are full of bakers, bookstore owners, journalists, cops, sisters, pet lovers, and people trying to hold ordinary lives together while something decidedly not ordinary happens around them. She has also picked up awards. Dead Wrong won Best Mystery Romance at the 2014 Indie Romance Convention, and Ghostly Paws won first place in the animal mystery category at the 2015 Chanticleer Mystery and Mayhem Awards.
These days she lives in New Hampshire with her husband Bruce, their Chihuahua mix Mojo, and a rescue cat named Kitty. Outside writing, she has talked about reading, gardening, making jewelry, daydreaming, and selling antiques. All of that helps explain why her books can move so easily between cozy charm and darker suspense. She understands comfort, but she also knows a good secret is what keeps the pages turning.
