Kylie Kendall Mysteries Books in Order

The Kylie Kendall books start with an excellent disruption. In The Wombat Strategy, Kylie is running a pub in the tiny outback town of Wollegudgerie, not planning a new life, when the father she barely knew leaves her 51 percent of a Los Angeles detective agency. Overnight she goes from local pub owner to accidental business partner, and the woman holding the other 49 percent, Ariana Creeling, would very much prefer to buy her out and move on.

Kylie is not a polished sleuth at the beginning, and that is the point. She is practical, nosy, impulsive, and funny, and she sees Los Angeles with the bafflement of someone who has landed on another planet. McNab gets a lot of mileage out of that outsider view. Hollywood vanity, American office culture, rich clients, and celebrity weirdness all look different when filtered through Kylie's blunt Australian common sense. Even when she is out of her depth, she rarely backs away from one more question.

Kylie tends to improvise.

The series keeps the stakes real, but it carries more bounce than McNab's Carol Ashton or Denise Cleever books. A suspicious suicide in the film world, opal smuggling inside children's toys, murder at a UCLA symposium, a family member in trouble on a television set, and Ariana's disappearance all push Kylie into cases that are messy, funny, and sometimes genuinely dangerous. She is always learning, often the hard way, and that learning curve is a big part of the charm.

Los Angeles is a big part of the appeal. Studios, mansions, campuses, retirement homes for fading stars, and cheap office spaces all become part of Kylie's working map. At the same time, the series never lets her Australian roots disappear. Relatives show up, old loyalties tug at her, and her outback habits keep rubbing against the glossy image of the city.

The emotional center is the slow-burn relationship between Kylie and Ariana. Their partnership begins in frost. Ariana is controlled, capable, and not at all pleased by the chaos Kylie brings into the agency. Kylie is drawn to her anyway. Much of the ongoing tension comes from whether they can trust each other, work together, and admit what is plainly building between them.

These are private eye mysteries with a lighter step, not lightweight mysteries. If you want a fish-out-of-water detective, sharp banter, and cases that enjoy the absurd side of Los Angeles without losing the murder plot, this is the series to try.
