Kristen Ciccarelli grew up in Ontario's Niagara Peninsula on her grandfather's grape farm, and that detail makes a lot of sense once you read her books. Vineyards, weather, old family stories, and a little wildness at the edge of home all feel close to the worlds she builds. She has said she was always making up stories as a kid, long before she thought writing could become a real job.

For years, though, she did not think of authors as ordinary people. She loved stories, but becoming a writer felt as unlikely as becoming something out of a fairy tale. Then she read Kristin Cashore's Graceling and found Cashore's blog, and that shifted things for her. Suddenly the people behind the books she loved seemed real, human, and reachable.

That made the dream feel possible.

Before writing became her full-time work, Ciccarelli dropped out of college and worked a string of hands-on jobs. She has talked about being a baker, a potter, and a bookseller before finally landing where she belonged. It was not a straight path, but it gave her a life beyond publishing before she circled back to the thing she had always loved most.

Her road to publication was not especially neat, either. In interviews, she has described years of drafting, revising, and rejection, plus the stubbornness it took to keep going. That persistence led to The Last Namsara, the first book in her Iskari world. It introduced readers to dragons, forbidden stories, and a heroine named Asha who has been shaped into a weapon and has to figure out who she is beneath the fear everyone projects onto her.

Ciccarelli stayed in that world for The Caged Queen and The Sky Weaver, but she did something a little more interesting than simply stretching one plot across three books. Each novel opens the world from a different angle, with new leads and new tensions, while still building on the same political and emotional fallout. Readers who click with her fantasy often like the same mix of things: layered myths, dangerous girls, romance with real friction, and magic that comes with a cost.

She clearly likes a heroine in trouble.

That thread runs through Edgewood too, a darker standalone built around a haunted forest, music, fae bargains, and the price of love. Then came The Crimson Moth and Rebel Witch, which brought her to a wider romantasy audience with witches, blood magic, and a very sharp enemies-to-lovers setup. Even as the scale of her readership has grown, her books still feel recognizably hers, emotional, high-stakes, and full of characters trying to choose between duty, desire, and survival.

Ciccarelli now lives in the Niagara region of Ontario with her husband and daughters. The girl who once ran around a grape farm and filled her time with stories now writes about dragons, cursed woods, and people who fall in love at the worst possible moment, which feels like a pretty good use of an imagination that never really settled down.
