Series background & context
The Knights Templar Mysteries are the backbone of Michael Jecks’s career, a long-running sequence that follows Sir Baldwin Furnshill and bailiff Simon Puttock through some of the most turbulent years of Edward II’s reign. The books start in rural Devon with local feuds and fires, but steadily widen until the pair are brushing up against queens, exiles and traitors.
Baldwin is a former Knight Templar who escaped the destruction of his order and carries that trauma into every case. He is controlled, observant and driven by a very personal sense of justice. Simon, as Bailiff of Lydford, is rooted in the law and responsibilities of the West Country: he knows the farmers, tinners and traders whose lives are overturned when someone dies violently.
Most novels open with a crime that looks simple on the surface. A house fire that seems accidental, a dead girl hidden in a chest, a murder at a fair, a hanging on the moor. As Baldwin and Simon investigate, they uncover layers of motive that reach from jealous neighbours and parish rivalries up to church politics, baronial plots and royal finances.
As the series goes on, the historical backdrop grows darker. Edward II’s dependence on favourites like the Despensers, Queen Isabella’s estrangement, and the rise of Roger Mortimer all feed into the stories. Later books move the action to London, Paris and even the royal court, while the prequel Templar’s Acre shows Baldwin as a young man at the fall of Acre.
Jecks balances tightly plotted mysteries with a strong sense of everyday medieval life. You see how manorial courts work, how fairs are organised, how a city copes with plague, famine or bands of outlaws. Violence is present, but the books are more interested in why people risk everything than in lingering on gore.
You can read the Knights Templar books in strict order and watch Baldwin and Simon age, gain families and accumulate enemies, or dip in where a particular historical moment catches your eye. Either way, expect a mix of solid detection, political tension and a vivid, often harsh picture of fourteenth century England.
