Series background & context

Mark Goodwin has built a reputation for stories that don’t just entertain, but also serve as a wake-up call. With the Kingdom of Darkness series, he takes his signature blend of tactical survivalism and weaves it directly into a biblical end-times timeline. It isn't just about surviving a grid-down scenario; it is about surviving the apocalypse exactly as described in the Book of Revelation.

The story introduces us to Emilio Vega at the lowest point of his life. He has been labeled a domestic terrorist by a government that views constitutionalists and preppers as threats to the established order. When we meet him, his fate seems sealed. He is shackled in the back of a transport vehicle, being moved to a "death camp" designed to silence political dissidents permanently.

Then the world breaks.

A seismic event of biblical proportions tears the ground apart, wrecking the transport vehicle and throwing the entire region into chaos. Emilio survives the crash, but the dust and rubble reveal a mystery that is far more unsettling than the earthquake itself. All around him, people are gone. Cars are empty. Piles of clothing sit where passengers used to be.

The horrific realization hits him immediately.

Emilio knows the prophecies. He understands that the sudden vanishings signify the Rapture, the moment believers are taken from the earth. The silence left in their wake confirms his worst fear: he is still here. He has been left behind to face the consequences.

From this desperate starting point, the series evolves into a high-stakes struggle through the Great Tribulation. The title, Kingdom of Darkness, is not metaphoric. It refers to the new global power structure that rises from the ashes of the old society. As panic and confusion grip the remaining population, a totalitarian regime steps in to offer false security in exchange for absolute control. This is the rise of the Beast system, and it is hunting down anyone who refuses to comply.

Emilio and a ragtag group of survivors must figure out how to navigate this hostile new reality. They are constantly on the move, facing standard post-apocalyptic threats like starvation, lack of medical supplies, and violent looters. However, the true danger is spiritual. The characters are forced to come to terms with their past mistakes while fighting against a system that wants to claim their souls.

It is a gritty, fast-paced narrative that combines the tension of a political thriller with the gravity of a spiritual drama. Goodwin challenges the reader to look beyond their bug-out bags and consider their spiritual standing, making this a survival story with eternal stakes.
