Kieran Kramer was born in Washington, D.C., to an Air Force pilot father and an actress and singer mother, but the place that seems to have shaped her most is Johns Island, near Charleston, South Carolina. She has written about growing up in the Lowcountry and even helping build her family's log home there. That deep sense of place helps explain why so many of her books, whether historical or contemporary, feel lived in from the ground up.

Before fiction became her main lane, Kramer worked a string of jobs that do not usually sit side by side in an author bio. She has worked for the CIA, written journalism for The Charlotte Observer, and taught English.
