Kevin Tinto Books in Order

Kevin Tinto was born in Wallace, Idaho, and grew up in Novato, California. He has long been based in Tiburon and Lake Tahoe, and that outdoor West Coast backdrop shows up all through his work. Before he became known for fiction, he built a life around motion, risk, and the kind of hobbies that make most people sit down and reconsider their insurance.

Adventure came first.

Tinto has written for newspapers and magazines including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Reno Gazette Journal, Bike TransAmerica, and Scuba Diver Magazine. He also spent years running a sports marketing business and building a large newsletter audience, which gave him a practical education in how readers find books and why some stories travel farther than others. Earlier in his career he spent time in New York working for companies including Chesebrough-Ponds and News Corporation, before returning to Marin and settling back in Tiburon.

His path into novels seems to have started with a question. Around 2000, after living in New Mexico for two years and spending time around ancient cliff dwellings, he began wondering why people had moved into such exposed and dangerous places in the first place. That curiosity turned into the seed of Ice. He later took research trips through the Southwest by motorcycle and dug into the region's landscapes, lore, and spiritual history while building out the larger story.

He has been open about the fact that he was not a natural star in English class.

What helped, by his own account, was storytelling instinct, a family full of writers, and a willingness to learn the craft the hard way. That practical streak fits the books. Tinto's fiction tends to feel built from experience, not just library notes. He is an avid mountaineer, skier, scuba diver, free diver, pilot, and adventurer, and he has also worked as a Level II certified ski instructor. When his novels put characters on ice, in the air, or in rough country, you can usually tell he knows what those places feel like.

His breakout novel, Ice, arrived in 2015 and introduced archaeologist Leah Andrews and mountaineer Jack Hobson. The book starts with a discovery in the American Southwest and expands into an Antarctic thriller with political, historical, and science fiction elements. It found a wide readership and won the action and adventure category at the 2016 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Tinto followed it with Ice Genesis in 2018 and Ice Revelation in 2020, completing a trilogy that keeps raising the stakes from buried mystery to global danger.

Readers who click with Tinto usually do so for the same reasons. He likes smart people under pressure, remote landscapes, hard travel, and discoveries that refuse to stay tidy. His books move quickly, but they are also packed with the nuts and bolts of climbing, flying, diving, survival, and logistics. Even when the ideas get big, the stories stay tied to people trying to keep up with the consequences.

In the early 2020s, he said the pandemic helped push him from balancing fiction with a long marketing career into life as a full-time author. He has also continued writing about the outdoors, including Northern California diving and coastal life. That feels like the through line with Kevin Tinto.
