Author bio

Kevin Partner is a British speculative fiction writer who moves easily between comic fantasy, space opera, and post-apocalyptic survival stories. Born in London in the 1960s and now based in Hampshire, he has built a body of work that usually starts with a big hook, then quickly narrows to the people caught inside it.

Before fiction became his main lane, he spent years writing in a different way. In the late 1990s he became a columnist for PC Pro, and he has said that more than twenty years of monthly deadlines taught him two useful things, the value of a good editor and the importance of turning work in on time.

That practical streak still shows in the novels.

Partner also wrote non-fiction, including a 2012 book about building an online business from his own experience running companies. But fiction was where he wanted to live. In 2016 he published Stryke First, the opening book in his early comic-fantasy trilogy set in Tworld, then completed the rest of that first run over the next eighteen months.

From there he widened out fast. Dawn Exodus launched his Robot Empire sequence, a space opera about a generation ship, lost truths, and a galaxy that has moved on without its travelers. Readers who like bigger science-fiction ideas tend to find him here, especially because the series balances robot empires and planetary stakes with a clear human center in Arla Farmer. Around the same period he also wrote the funny, magic-heavy Faerie King Trilogy, which shows his lighter side without losing the momentum that drives his other books.

Then came the post-apocalyptic fiction that brought in a wider readership.

Working with Mike Kraus, Partner wrote a long run of collaborative novels, eighteen books in all, set across several different disaster scenarios. Those collaborations include The Long Night, Last City, and Deluge, books that mix large-scale collapse with smaller, sharper worries like missing children, fragile communities, and the question of who gets to stay decent when systems fail. The settings are often American, the stakes are high, and the chapters move quickly, but the emotional pull usually comes from ordinary people being pushed much too far.

In 2021 he moved back into solo post-apocalyptic fiction with Extinction Pulse, the first Nightfall novel. That series follows several groups of survivors after a deadly aurora event, including former detective Elijah Wade and astronomer Hannah Redman. He followed it with Future's Fall, set thirty-five years later in the same broad world, this time with Reuben Bane carrying much of the story. Those books show what Partner does especially well, taking a dramatic premise and keeping the focus on pressure, conscience, and the hard work of survival.

Away from the page, he has described himself as a husband, father of two daughters and a son, web developer, and everyday writer. He has also written about sharing business life with his wife and about the pleasure he takes in learning new things. In recent years he noted that he had reached his fiftieth novel, which feels like a good summary of his career so far, steady, varied, and always moving.

If you read across his work, the range is obvious. Funny fantasy, classic-style space opera, gaslamp gothic, flooded worlds, ruined highways. The common thread is simpler. He likes stories about people under strain, and he likes getting the next chapter to you before you can comfortably stop.
