Author bio
Keri Lake is a Michigan writer who has made a career out of turning dark corners into love stories with teeth. She went to Michigan State University and earned two science degrees, which helps explain the way her books balance wild premises with very concrete details.
She didn't start with novels.
For years, she wrote poetry, flash fiction, and short stories. When she finally decided to try something bigger, she did it the hard way, in stolen pieces of time. In one early post about her writing life, she talks about working on fiction before work, in the car at lunch, after work, on weekends, and even on Christmas morning before her kids woke up.
She was learning the business at the same time, sending query letters, reading up on publishing, joining writing groups, and figuring out what kind of writer she wanted to be. A phone call with her sister helped spark the book that became Somnium, her 2011 debut. That project seems to have flipped a switch. Once she realized she could carry a full novel, she kept going.
And she kept going into the dark.
There is something fitting about Lake coming out of a science background. Even in her most fantastical books, the bodies matter. Curses feel physical. Illness has texture. Her worlds usually have rules, and the fear often lands because it feels disturbingly specific.
That dark streak runs through almost everything she writes, even when the genre shifts. In Soul Avenged, readers get demon brothers, lycans, and a violent supernatural Detroit. Ricochet drops the fantasy but keeps the danger, following wounded vigilantes and revenge plots on city streets. Master of Salt & Bones is pure gothic mood, all cursed history, shoreline isolation, and a broken man in a forbidding house. Nocticadia moves into dark academia on a haunted island campus, while Anathema and Eldritch show just how far she can stretch into large-scale fantasy without losing the emotional pull.
Readers who stay with her across series tend to like that mix of atmosphere and momentum. She can linger in a setting, but she also likes a hard hook: a woman crossing a forbidden boundary, a student drawn to a terrifying professor, a mother renting a room to the wrong man, a vigilante kidnapping the mayor's wife. Her books are heavy on obsession, vengeance, forbidden attraction, and characters who are already carrying too much damage before the story even starts.
The place matters too. Detroit, ruined cathedrals, isolated schools, decaying manors, swamp country, cursed forests. In a Keri Lake novel, setting is never just wallpaper.
Over time, that mix has turned her into a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. But her public bio still feels pretty grounded. She writes about family life with her husband, daughters, and dogs, and about the small things that keep her going, strong coffee, moody playlists, red wine, and dark chocolate. She still lives in Michigan, still seems drawn to the eerie and the beautiful, and still writes books for readers who want atmosphere, intensity, and a romance that is never going to play nice.
