Series background & context

Kelly Lakes is Stephanie Rose's small-town romance world, and it is built around the idea of starting over. People come here after heartbreak, scandal, divorce, grief, burnout, or plain bad luck. The town offers a softer landing than the lives they are leaving behind, but Rose never pretends a pretty setting fixes everything on its own.

An Unexpected Turn starts that pattern clearly. Peyton arrives in town after a damaging affair has upended her life and career, hoping a new guidance counselor job will give her a clean slate. Instead she runs straight into Jake, a single dad with his own hard history and several very good reasons why getting involved would be a bad idea. That mix of comfort and complication sets the tone for the series.

Starting Back follows Kristina, a divorced mother of two who meets Leo on what was supposed to be a temporary escape in the Florida Keys, only to find him again later in her hometown. Raising The Bar keeps the focus on adults trying to build fuller lives, while Safe With Me adds a stronger romantic-suspense thread when a woman fleeing danger lands in Kelly Lakes and finds unexpected protection in Mike.

Kelly Lakes is the kind of place people run to when life goes sideways.

The setting matters because it creates overlap. Friends know each other. Family ties carry weight. Kids, exes, first responders, bosses, and longtime locals all make choices harder and support more meaningful. Even when the books are steamy, there is a grounded, neighborly feeling underneath them. Rose seems very comfortable writing grown people with actual responsibilities, and that gives the romances more texture.

Tone-wise, the series sits in a sweet spot between cozy and emotionally intense. There are age gaps, single parents, second chances, and plenty of chemistry, but there is also an ongoing interest in healing, dignity, and what it takes to feel safe with another person. If you want small-town romance that is warm without being weightless, Kelly Lakes does that well. It is a connected world where love can surprise people, but usually only after they have been through enough to know what it is worth.
