Author bio
Kelly Hunter was born and raised in Newcastle, Australia, a port city that still shows up in the way she talks about work, weather, and home. She has said she still loves rugged beaches, loud engines, and the kind of music meant for an Aussie pub singalong.
Long before she was writing romance, she trained in science. Hunter earned an honours degree in Rural Science, worked as a research fellow in biochemistry, and then moved through jobs in agronomy and public science, including work with Australia’s national science agency, the CSIRO. It is not the usual path into category romance, which is part of why her books often feel grounded in work, competence, and the practical details of everyday life.
Then Malaysia happened.
In 2000 she was living and working outstation in Malaysia on a biological control program while raising young children. Books and schoolwork arrived in parcels, she homeschooled in the afternoons, and because English language romance novels were hard to get, she started writing one herself. That improvised beginning became a career.
Readers who pick up early books such as Wife for a Week, Bedded for Diamonds, and Her Singapore Fling usually find what became her signature mix, sharp dialogue, strong attraction, and people who have to negotiate real-world pressures as well as feelings. Her settings travel easily, from Hong Kong and Singapore to Greek islands and the Australian coast, but the emotional engine is usually the same. Two capable people meet, clash, flirt, and slowly realize the stakes are higher than they planned.
Family is all over her work. The Bennett books, the West books, and the Jackson family stories are full of siblings who interfere, protect, and occasionally make a mess of things. Even when Hunter writes glossier royal romances such as Shock Heir For The Crown Prince or Convenient Bride For The King, she keeps an eye on the human stuff, duty, loyalty, resentment, class gaps, and the awkward fact that desire rarely arrives at a convenient time.
She also likes giving love a place to live.
That is part of why later books like Maggie’s Run, Must Love Christmas, and Cinderella and the Outback Billionaire feel so rooted in community. There are cattle stations, small towns, inherited land, local history, and characters trying to decide what home means before they can build a future with anyone else. The romances can be funny, tender, or a little bruised, but they keep returning to resilience.
Hunter has also been active behind the scenes of romance writing. She served in multiple roles with Romance Writers of Australia, including president, and later became an executive editor for Tule Publishing’s Holiday imprint. That mix of writer and editor helps explain how cleanly built her books are. They move fast, but they know exactly what they are doing.
She still calls Australia home. By her own account she is easily distracted by new projects, fond of travel and roses, and happiest when a story earns its ending. That sounds about right for a writer whose books are brisk on the surface, but warmer and more observant than they first appear.
