Kellerman Books in Order

Kellerman is Al Lamanda's blunt instrument. He is a former Marine, sometimes private investigator, oftentimes hit man for hire, and he moves through New York with the kind of confidence that usually means someone is about to get hurt. The series starts with Checkmate, and from page one the appeal is obvious. Kellerman is not nice, not polished, and not interested in pretending the world is cleaner than it is.

He does, however, have a code.

That code is what keeps the books from turning into simple revenge fantasies. Kellerman works outside the lines, but he is not random. He picks his spots, protects his own, and reacts badly to predators who think money or influence can buy them a free pass. In Checkmate, he is pulled into a case after rapists beat the system on a technicality. That setup tells you a lot about the kind of justice these books are interested in.

The supporting cast helps give the series its shape. Maria Lopez, the ex-cop who is the love of Kellerman's life, gives the books some emotional grounding and raises the stakes whenever she is in danger. His wider circle includes old military ties and underworld connections, which keeps the stories balanced between law, crime, and the gray area in the middle. Nobody in these books is especially naive.

As the series goes on through Lollypops, Hard Time, Cold As Ice, Shades of Gotham, and Saving Grace, the jobs get messier. Maria is framed for murder in Hard Time. A missing boy and an inheritance drive Cold As Ice. Shades of Gotham turns into a hunt for a serial killer. Saving Grace begins as a bodyguard assignment and slides into murder, extortion, and survival. Kellerman may look like a one-man wrecking crew, but the plots keep giving him problems brute force cannot solve by itself.

The tone is hard-boiled in the old sense. The books are fast, violent, and packed with people who live close to the edge. But they are not all muscle. There is dry humor, a little swagger, and a steady sense that Kellerman knows exactly how strange his own life has become. Lamanda lets the character be larger than life without cutting him loose from consequence.

If John Bekker is the wounded detective trying to rebuild himself, Kellerman is the man who never waits for permission in the first place. These books are for readers who want rougher justice, dirtier streets, and a lead who solves problems with his fists, his instincts, and whatever else the job requires.
