Author bio

Kekla Magoon was born in Michigan and grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in a biracial family with a Black father from Cameroon and a white American mother. She also spent several early years in Cameroon. That mix of Midwestern roots, family history, and time abroad helps explain why so many of her books care deeply about identity, belonging, and the worlds kids move between.

Books were part of daily life from the start.

Her mother read to her often, took her to the library every week, and made reading feel ordinary and joyful. Magoon wrote her first novel in high school, but she did not become a full-time writer right away. She went to Northwestern University, where she studied history with a focus on Africa and the Middle East, and that training stayed with her. Her fiction and nonfiction both show a strong interest in how the past shapes everyday life.

After college, she lived in New York City and worked for nonprofit organizations, including youth and community groups. Those jobs taught her about people, systems, fundraising, and the limits of office life. More important, they gave her a close look at the kinds of communities and power struggles that later appear in her books.

It took her a while to realize that writing for young people was the work she wanted most.

That became clear when she enrolled in the MFA program in writing at Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has said the program helped her see a path forward, not just as someone who loved books, but as someone who could build a life around making them. Her first novel, The Rock and the River, set in 1968 Chicago, introduced many readers to her interest in history, family tension, and political choice, and it won the Coretta Scott King-John Steptoe Award for New Talent.

From there, Magoon kept moving between contemporary stories and historical ones. How It Went Down and Light It Up look at what happens to a community after police killings, using multiple voices to show grief, anger, rumor, and protest. X follows Malcolm Little before he became Malcolm X, and Revolution in Our Time turns her long-running interest in the Black Panther Party into a deeply researched work of nonfiction. Even when the subjects are large, her books stay close to the human stakes.

She also writes middle grade novels that feel roomy, funny, and emotionally sharp.

Readers who start with The Season of Styx Malone often notice how good she is at mixing adventure with tenderness. Chester Keene Cracks the Code brings mystery and family questions into a lively scavenger-hunt story, while The Secret Library opens into time travel, family secrets, and the thrill of choosing your own path. Across age groups, her characters are often kids standing at a crossroads, trying to decide who they are and what they owe to other people.

Over time, that body of work brought major recognition, including the Margaret A. Edwards Award in 2021 and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. These days Magoon lives and writes in Vermont. She is a full-time author, speaker, and writing teacher, and after teaching for eight years at Vermont College of Fine Arts, she became faculty emerita there. She still travels to schools and libraries to talk with readers, which feels fitting for a writer whose books keep asking young people to pay attention, ask questions, and see themselves as part of the story.
