Author bio
Kayley Loring writes romantic comedies that are funny, very steamy, and full of people who feel like they could text you back. Her books are built on banter, strong heroines, messy feelings, and heroes who usually need to work a little harder than they expected.
Before she started publishing romance, she earned a BFA in creative writing at a Canadian university and spent about fifteen years working as a screenwriter in Los Angeles under a different name. Most of that work was in PG-13 family comedy. It paid the bills, but a lot of those scripts never made it to the screen.
That old Hollywood background still shows.
A lot of her books move fast, land jokes cleanly, and feel sharp in the way good screen comedy does. Then she layers in the emotional stuff. Characters flirt, argue, dodge their feelings, and finally say the thing they have been trying not to say for two hundred pages.
In 2017, she moved to the Pacific Northwest and leaned fully into writing the kind of stories she could not write in those studio scripts. That meant dirtier language, hotter romance, and more room for the weird little details that make her books feel lived in. Her public bios often joke that the air got cleaner while the words got dirtier, which tells you a lot about her sense of humor.
If you want a good sample of what she does, A Very Bossy Christmas is a great place to look. It has the holiday setup, the sharp back-and-forth, and the big emotional payoff that readers come to her for. Sleeper shows another side of her work, with Hollywood chaos, a single dad movie star, and a warm, funny heart under all the sexy tension.
Then there is Funny Business, which leans into showbiz and comedy even harder, and The Love Interest, which turns letters, writing, and forbidden attraction into a playful but genuinely swoony setup. More recently, Resistance Training gives readers a second-chance story with old wounds, adult regrets, and a lot of hard-earned tenderness.
Across her series, a few things come up again and again. She likes smart women who know their minds, even when life is a mess. She likes heroes who can be cocky, grumpy, awkward, or deeply gone from the start. She likes found family, busy group chats, recurring side characters, and settings that feel fun to hang out in, from Hollywood circles to small coastal towns to sports-heavy team worlds.
She has also built a strong following in audio. Many of her books have ensemble or duet-style productions, and that fits her writing especially well because so much of the appeal is in the rhythm of the dialogue. Her stories are made for voices.
She is now known as an Amazon Top 25 and USA Today bestselling romance author, but the day-to-day picture is a lot less fancy and much more relatable. Her bios mention cats, plants, book hoarding, BBC mysteries, Harry Potter movies, and an ongoing search for the perfect pair of boots.
That sounds about right.
What readers usually get from a Kayley Loring book is not just heat, though there is plenty of that. It is the mix. The jokes land, the chemistry feels real, and somewhere between the flirting and the chaos, the characters start to feel like people you would happily spend another book with.
