Author bio
Kay Hooper writes romantic suspense and paranormal thrillers, with a long career that began in romance. She lives in North Carolina. Her books bring people into danger through secrets, criminal investigations and abilities they may not fully understand, while keeping their relationships close to the centre of the story. A character’s willingness to trust someone can matter as much as finding the next clue.
Her first published novel, Lady Thief, appeared in 1981. It was a Regency romance featuring a heroine who robbed coaches while masked, armed and riding a black stallion. That unconventional beginning fits the direction her work later took: people with strong motives, hidden identities and problems that cannot be solved by attraction alone. She sold her first book when she was twenty-two.
Romance was where she learned her craft.
Hooper describes nearly a decade of writing romances as an apprenticeship, with steady demand giving her opportunities to develop characters and plots. Those stories often included mysteries, danger or humour alongside the relationship. She has written contemporary and historical fiction as well as suspense, and her interest in what people survive links the different parts of her catalogue rather than leaving them as entirely separate stages.
Her first psychic heroine appeared in If There Be Dragons, published in 1984. The supernatural later became a larger part of her work, especially in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit novels. These stories build a world where unusual perceptions can become investigative tools, but also make the people using them vulnerable. Knowing something other people cannot see does not automatically mean knowing how to prove it or stop a crime.
Stealing Shadows introduces Cassie Neill, a psychic who retreats from Los Angeles to a North Carolina town after a devastating failure. Her hopes for quiet are interrupted when she senses a murderer nearby. The book draws on Hooper’s interests in mysteries and the paranormal, asking what it costs to enter a killer’s mind and how someone can face danger after losing confidence in herself.
In Hiding in the Shadows, Faith Parker awakens from a coma without the memories that would explain her life. Hooper has described the story’s starting point as a sudden idea about severed connections and uncertain identity. That concern with the links between people, their pasts and their possible futures gives the suspense an emotional question alongside the immediate mystery of what has happened.
Trust is a recurring problem in her fiction.
Her earlier connected romances offer another route into that theme. In Raven on the Wing, Josh Long’s attraction to Raven Anderson runs into evidence that makes her identity difficult to accept. The romance and the danger develop together, with the truth creating risks for both characters. Readers who enjoy a central relationship can explore those books before moving into the larger team investigations of her psychic crime series.
Animal rescue is another important part of Hooper’s life, and she describes it as a second vocation alongside writing. Her own account of her work stresses an enduring interest in survivors and in giving love a place within suspense. Across a Regency adventure, a contemporary romance or a paranormal investigation, her characters have to work through fear and uncertainty before they can imagine a more secure future.
