Author bio

Katia Lief was born in France to American parents, a musician and a teacher. She grew up along the East Coast with an older sister and younger brother, spending her childhood between Massachusetts and New York.

Her route to adulthood was not exactly conventional. At fifteen, she left boarding school for Simon's Rock Early College, then graduated from Sarah Lawrence College at nineteen before heading to Paris for six months. Back in New York, she took a job in publishing and worked in a range of businesses while continuing to find her way as a writer.

Writing had been on the horizon since childhood. A one-page third-grade story about a woman who realizes her teeth have turned invisible caught her teacher's attention, and the teacher told Lief's parents that Katia could be a writer.

It stuck.

Her early novels appeared under the name Katia Spiegelman, including Soul Catcher and Peculiar Politics: Love, Sex and the Wrong Bride. Those books lean toward coming-of-age stories, relationships, work, and the messy comedy of people trying to make adult lives fit together.

After adding Lief to her name and becoming a mother, she began writing thrillers under the pseudonym Kate Pepper. Five Days in Summer, Here She Lies, Seven Minutes to Noon, and One Cold Night put ordinary people under immediate pressure: a missing mother, a stolen identity, a vanished pregnant friend, a teenage girl who does not come home. The tension comes from close-to-home fears, especially the way a safe family routine can break apart in a few hours.

Then came the Karin Schaeffer books, published as Katia Lief. The series begins with You Are Next, in which former detective Karin has survived a serial killer's attack on her family and must decide whether she can keep living. Next Time You See Me, Vanishing Girls, and The Money Kill follow Karin and her husband, Mac MacLeary, through investigations shaped by grief, loyalty, missing people, and the risks of protecting a family.

Karin does not get an easy reset button.

Lief has also continued to write outside crime fiction. The Beautiful Years follows a choice made at college graduation and its effect on three friends over seven years. Cartoons: The Rise and Fall of Rocky Love looks at ambition, fame, and a young cartoonist working for a difficult celebrity. More recently, House of a Thousand Eyes moves between Cold War Berlin and New York, while Invisible Woman follows former filmmaker Joni Ackerman as an old Hollywood secret begins to unravel her marriage and friendships.

She has also written as Karen Ellis, the name used for A Map of the Dark and Last Night. Across the different names, her books return to people carrying secrets, families under strain, women trying to reclaim room in their own lives, and the unsettling question of how well anyone can know another person.

Lief earned a master's degree in literature and creative writing and teaches fiction writing at The New School in Manhattan. She lives in Brooklyn with her family. Her many author names may look complicated on a shelf, but the through line is simple: sharp human stakes, difficult choices, and characters who have to act before the ground shifts again.
