Katherine Cowley Books in Order

Katherine Cowley is a mystery author and writing teacher whose fiction gives Jane Austen’s often-overlooked Mary Bennet a far more dangerous second act. Cowley first read Pride and Prejudice when she was ten, loved it, and reread it a few months later. That early attachment to Austen’s world later found its way into her own work.

Her debut novel, The Secret Life of Miss Mary Bennet, arrived in 2021. It imagines Mary after the events of Pride and Prejudice, facing an uncertain future, a suspicious new household, and a mystery that reaches beyond the drawing room. The book was nominated for the 2022 Mary Higgins Clark Award.

Cowley continued Mary’s story in The True Confessions of a London Spy and The Lady’s Guide to Death and Deception. The series turns a familiar Austen character into an agent for the British government during the Napoleonic era. Mary remains thoughtful, awkward, observant, and stubborn, but the stakes grow from a country-house mystery to political unrest in London and wartime danger in Brussels.

The books mix Regency manners with investigations, codes, secret work, and real historical pressure. Cowley uses the social limits placed on women as part of the suspense: Mary’s ability to pass unnoticed can be frustrating, but it can also make her an effective investigator. Her stories leave room for family tensions, friendship, romance, and the practical question of how a woman with little money or freedom can make choices for herself.

Writing is also central to Cowley’s day-to-day work. She teaches writing at Western Michigan University and has shared lessons on writing and Jane Austen through her blog. Her nonfiction book Write with Jane Austen brings those interests together, looking at writing craft through Austen’s novels and methods.

Cowley has said she loves history, travel, chocolate, and playing the piano, interests that fit naturally beside her period mysteries. She lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with her husband and three daughters. Along with her novels, she has published short stories, and her work as a teacher keeps her close to the practical side of storytelling: how characters, scenes, details, and sentences earn their place on the page.
