Series background & context

Abbeyford is the kind of West Country town that looks calm until somebody dies.

The Kate Redman books are modern police procedurals built around Detective Sergeant, and later Detective Inspector, Kate Redman. She is smart, stubborn, intuitive and often carrying more emotional weight than she lets on. The series opens with Hushabye, where Kate arrives for the first day of a new job and walks straight into the kidnapping of a wealthy baby. That setup tells you a lot about these books. The cases move fast, but they are never just puzzles. They hit families, friendships and old wounds, and Kate rarely gets to stand at a safe distance from any of it.

Kate works in the fictional town of Abbeyford with a recurring police team that gives the series much of its pull. Mark Olbeck is one of the most important figures around her, first as colleague and partner, later in a more senior role, and the wider CID team becomes more familiar with every book. That matters, because these novels reward readers who like an ongoing cast as much as they like a murder investigation. Relationships shift, promotions happen, loyalties are tested, and the job follows everyone home.

The crimes themselves cover a wide range. Some books lean into missing persons, some into apparent suicides, some into organized crime, political tension, sexual secrets, vigilante violence or old-fashioned hidden motives. Creed turns a prestigious school into a deeply uneasy setting. Sanctuary pulls Kate into a case tied to migration and charity. Siren starts with a wealthy family man found murdered in brutal circumstances. Later books like Muse, Undertow and Mercy show the series still widening its scope while keeping Kate at the emotional center.

What keeps the books feeling connected is the setting. Abbeyford is fictional, but it has the texture of a real English town, with graveyards, schools, stately homes, pubs, suburbs, beaches and winding rural roads all feeding into the atmosphere. Grace is very good at showing how crime spreads outward. A body found in one place can unsettle a whole community, and a case that seems small can end up touching class, family, money and memory.

Kate herself is the real through-line. She is not a flawless detective and that is the point. She makes bad calls, second-guesses herself, gets emotionally entangled and keeps going anyway. Across the series you see her career grow, her personal life change, and her sense of herself shift as she deals with love, grief, family history and, in the later books, motherhood. If you read in order, that arc gives the series extra depth. If you jump in later, each case still works on its own.

These are brisk, readable mysteries with a little more feeling than the average procedural.

If you like crime fiction that balances clever cases with a lead you can genuinely worry about, this is where Celina Grace does some of her steadiest work.
