The Bounty

by Steve Hamilton

2021

In this Fox and O'Hare adventure, straight-arrow FBI agent Kate O'Hare and charming thief Nick Fox team up with their equally difficult fathers to stop a secret group called the Brotherhood. The chase for a lost train of Nazi gold sends them from the Vatican to deserts and mountains in a fast, playful heist.

Series background & context

The Kate O'Hare and Nicolas Fox novels are caper stories built around an unlikely partnership. Kate is a driven FBI special agent who has made a career out of chasing Nick, a globe trotting thief and con artist with a taste for elaborate scams. When the Bureau secretly puts him on the payroll, the two of them start working side by side.

Their job is to bring down criminals who sit beyond the reach of ordinary cases, corrupt tycoons, arms dealers, and shadowy organizations that can buy or intimidate their way past normal investigations. To do it, Kate and Nick stage big cons of their own, setting up fake companies, fake identities, and high tech illusions in order to steal back money, art, or secrets and leave the villains exposed.

The books mix heists with a screwball tone. Kate is meticulous and by the book. Nick is charming, slippery, and allergic to rules. Around them is a recurring cast that includes Kate's father Jake, a retired special forces operator who loves explosives a little too much, plus actors, hackers, and other oddballs who sign on for each operation. Settings jump from European capitals to Pacific islands, from casinos and museums to deserts and mountain passes.

The Bounty, cowritten by Janet Evanovich and Steve Hamilton, throws the duo into one of their biggest schemes. A secret group known as the Brotherhood is searching for a lost train stuffed with Nazi gold hidden somewhere in Europe. Kate and Nick race them across the Alps, the Vatican, and the Sahara, teaming up with their equally complicated fathers to find the treasure first and keep it out of the Brotherhood's hands.

Readers coming from Hamilton's darker series will find a lighter mood here. The violence is present but usually sits behind the banter, disguises, and ticking clock puzzles that drive each heist. What matters most is the chemistry between two people who are not sure whether they trust each other, yet keep choosing to jump into the next con together.

Because Hamilton joins the series later, you can treat The Bounty as a standalone adventure or as a continuation of a longer arc that begins in the earlier Fox and O'Hare books. Either way, expect quick pacing, international scenery, and an emphasis on clever setups over grim introspection.
