Series background & context

The Katama Bay series drops you into a corner of Marthas Vineyard where saltwater, yoga mats, and second chances all seem to meet at the same front door. At the heart of it is the Katama Lodge and Wellness Spa, run by Nancy Remington, a woman who has spent decades trying to outrun her own past and make peace with the choices she made as a young mother.

The story opens with Return To Me, when Nancys estranged daughter Janine Potter loses her glittering Manhattan life overnight. Her husband betrays her, the parties and penthouses vanish, and she realizes the only person left who might take her in is the mother she once swore she would never become. Janines arrival on the Vineyard forces both women to decide whether they are ready to forgive, and what it would mean to build a real relationship after so many years apart.

As the series moves through Healing Tides and Summertime Nights, the focus widens to include Nancys stepdaughters Elsa and Carmella, their partners, and the three children left reeling after the death of Elsas husband. The lodge becomes more than a business. It is a place where grief groups gather on the deck, where guests come for spa weekends and leave with new friends, and where family members clock in to work side by side even when they are not sure how to talk over dinner.

Later books follow the family through autumn storms, Thanksgiving tables, and sparkling Christmas seasons. In A Katama Bay Christmas and New Beginnings, grown children deal with infertility and fresh heartbreak, while Nancy and Janine navigate what it means to be mother and daughter in middle age. A mysterious older guest may not be who she claims to be, Venice canals appear in a late series trip that ties back to Janines late husband, and new romances keep pushing everyone to rethink what happily ever after could look like.

Throughout, Katie Winters keeps the tone warm and intimate. The stakes are personal more than flashy, a frightening diagnosis, a secret diary, a marriage coming apart quietly. The island setting adds bright color, from long walks on South Beach to crowded summer ferries and hushed winter nights when the lodge feels like a refuge against the dark.

Readers who like to follow one large, evolving family will find a lot to love here. Each book highlights a different woman, but the threads are continuous, and side characters often step into the spotlight a few installments later. You can dip in almost anywhere, yet the emotional payoff is strongest if you start at the beginning and let the tides of Katama Bay carry you forward with the Potters and Remingtons.
