Kat Rosenfield grew up in Coxsackie, New York, a small Hudson Valley town whose close quarters and watchful energy show up later in her fiction. She went to Drew University, then moved into publishing and media work in New York. Before many readers knew her as a novelist, she had already worked as a publicist, copywriter, and freelance writer, learning how stories travel and how voices land.

She wrote from the side of the desk for a while.

Her first novel started with a writing exercise and a first line she couldn't shake. That spark grew into Amelia Anne Is Dead and Gone, a 2012 debut about a dead girl, a restless teenager named Becca, and a small town full of pressure and rumor. The book earned an Edgar nomination and announced some of Rosenfield's lasting interests: young women in trouble, places that feel too tight to breathe in, and mysteries that matter because of who they expose.

She followed it with Inland, which leans toward the uncanny without giving up its emotional realism. Callie Morgan returns to the coast after years away and finds herself pulled toward the water that once took her mother. Rosenfield has said the book began when she tried to imagine a mermaid story she would actually want to write, and the result is eerie, salty, and usefully unsure about where illness ends and the supernatural begins.

Later books moved her into adult suspense, but the same questions stayed in place. No One Will Miss Her takes a murder in rural Maine and turns it into a sharp story about class, reinvention, and the lives women imagine for themselves when the one they have starts to feel unbearable. You Must Remember This shifts to an icy family mystery on Mount Desert Island, where memory, inheritance, and an old love affair tangle together. How to Survive in the Woods traps its characters in Maine's Hundred Mile Wilderness and turns survival into something physical, emotional, and very hard to fake.

Rosenfield's range is wider than straight thrillers. She also co-wrote A Trick of Light with Stan Lee, then returned to that universe with A New Reality, a pair of tech-driven science fiction adventures built around hackers, strange powers, hidden systems, and the dark side of human connection online. Even there, the Rosenfield pattern is easy to spot: lonely people, dangerous secrets, and the uneasy gap between the self you present and the self you actually are.

Across her work, she comes back to isolation, status, desire, and the way communities decide who belongs. Her characters are often girls or women on the edge of a new identity, sometimes in small towns, sometimes by the sea, sometimes inside a digital maze.
