Author bio

Karin Salvalaggio was born in West Virginia in the 1960s. Her father was in the military and her mother was a homemaker, so childhood meant regular moves and fresh starts. She lived in places as different as Alaska, Florida, California, and Iran, learning early what it feels like to arrive somewhere new and size up a community.

Books were a constant through all that movement.

She attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, graduating in 1989. Later, she spent two years in Italy and settled in London in 1994. She went on to earn an MA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck, University of London.

Writing fiction took a long route. Salvalaggio had wanted to write when she was younger, but chose to study science because it seemed like the practical path. She later worked as a graphic designer, then found herself reconsidering her future after a divorce. A two-week creative writing course in Greece gave her a different plan, and she enrolled at Birkbeck in 2010.

It was a risk that paid off.

Within about a year and a half, she had an agent. Her short story Walleye Junction appeared in the Mechanics Institute Review in 2011, and her first full-length novel, Bone Dust White, followed in 2014. That book introduced Detective Macy Greeley and the hard-edged Montana towns that became the center of Salvalaggio's crime fiction.

The Macy Greeley novels continued with Burnt River, Walleye Junction, and Silent Rain. They pair murder investigations with close attention to the people caught around them: young women trying to protect themselves, families carrying old grief, veterans, parents, and residents of towns where everybody has a history. Montana's weather and wide-open country are never just scenery. Snow, drought, fire, and distance all add pressure to Macy's cases.

Salvalaggio has said that the aftermath of crime interests her as much as the crime itself. Her stories look at what violence does to families and small communities, rather than lingering on grisly details. Macy, meanwhile, is a detective who has to rely on persistence and judgment while handling the demands of motherhood and police work.

She has lived in London for much of her adult life, while setting her fiction in the American West. That gap gives the books a clear sense of place without making the landscape feel like a postcard. The result is a compact run of mysteries built around troubled communities, difficult choices, and a detective who keeps asking questions after everyone else would rather move on.
