Author bio

Karen Ranney was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and grew up in an Air Force family that moved often. She spent part of her childhood in places like Paris and Naples, and that mix of travel, change, and looking at the world from the edges seems to have stayed with her.

Stories started early.

Ranney said she began writing when she was five. In first grade, a short piece called The Maple Leaf was read over the school intercom, which is a pretty good way to learn that words can travel farther than you do.

As a girl, she imagined several futures for herself. She wanted to be a violinist, and her parents even had a special violin made for her when she was seven. She also thought about the law, teaching, and other kinds of work. Writing was the one thread that kept coming back.

That persistence mattered.

After finishing her first novel, Above All Others, she found an agent. While waiting for a publisher, she kept going instead of stalling out. She wrote Tapestry, began A Promise of Love, and built the habit that would define the rest of her career, steady work, one book after another, even before anyone had said yes.

Kensington eventually bought those early manuscripts, and Ranney was off. Over the years she wrote historical romance, paranormal romance, contemporary romantic suspense, mystery, and a little nonfiction. She also published some work as Katherine Storm. However wide the range became, she had a knack for making emotion feel close and immediate.

Most readers know her best for Scotland.

Books like One Man's Love, The Devil of Clan Sinclair, The Scottish Duke, and My Highland Rogue show the shape of what she loved to do. She wrote proud women, wounded or secretive men, old houses full of history, and families still wrestling with the past. Even when the setup looked classic on the surface, she often slipped in something extra, a hidden identity, an inheritance fight, a scientific obsession, a village mystery, or a private grief that would not stay buried.

She could be serious, but she could also be funny.

That lighter side comes through in The Fertile Vampire and the later Furry books, where vampires, witches, werewolves, and modern frustration all collide. The details get stranger, the humor gets sharper, but the engine is still familiar: a heroine in chaos, a stubborn streak, and a love story trying to survive secrets, danger, and family trouble.

Ranney's books reached both the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. She was nominated nine times for Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice awards, and in 2002 she received the magazine's Career Achievement Award for British-set Historical Romance. Those are plain facts, but they also say something simple. Readers kept coming back.

She spent her later years in Texas and kept writing right up to the end of her career. Ranney died in June 2020, shortly before My Highland Rogue was published. Her shelf still feels inviting, especially if you like Scottish settings, strong feeling, and romances where love has to work hard to win.
