Kara Thomas Books in Order

Kara Thomas grew up on Long Island, New York, and studied English at Stony Brook University. She writes twisty mysteries for teens and adults, and her books tend to begin with the kind of question that unsettles everyone involved: what really happened, and who has been lying about it?

She wanted to be a writer early.

While she was at Stony Brook, she worked on her first novel in the hallways between classes. She has said she pictured herself as a high school English teacher by day and a novelist by night, but publishing arrived sooner than expected. During student teaching, she got the call that her first book had sold, and the plan for a more ordinary first job changed fast.

Her first published books came out under the name Kara Taylor, beginning with Prep School Confidential. Those novels mixed school drama, murder, and sharp teenage voices, and they helped set the pattern for what she does well: quick pacing, messy friendships, and secrets that keep getting worse the longer people sit on them.

Then came the run of standalones that made her a regular name for YA thriller readers. The Darkest Corners sends a girl back to the Pennsylvania town tied to a childhood murder. Little Monsters turns a fresh start in a small Wisconsin town into something far more unsettling. The Cheerleaders and That Weekend both show how quickly an ordinary teen social world can tip into panic, suspicion, and danger.

Her books are full of small towns, buried histories, missing pieces, and girls who know adults are not telling the whole story.

What readers often come back for is the mix of tension and voice. Her teenagers feel like teenagers, not miniature detectives dropped into an adult plot, and the mysteries are built around friendships, family damage, and the strange power structures of schools and hometowns. She has also talked about loving the puzzle side of thriller writing, especially the challenge of building twists that still hold together once the whole picture comes into view.

In recent years she has carried that same approach into adult suspense. Out of the Ashes follows Samantha Newsom back into the cold case that destroyed her family, while Lost to Dune Road follows reporter Lee Ellerin into a wealthy world that would rather keep its crimes buried. She later returned to Sunnybrook in The Champions, a second novel set in the same town as The Cheerleaders, this time with football glory, old grief, and new violence colliding.

She has also worked in television. In 2013, she wrote and developed the pilot The Revengers with Rashida Jones and Will McCormack for The CW. Her books have been sold in multiple languages, and her work has been nominated for the International Thriller Writers Award.

Thomas still lives on Long Island with her husband, son, and rescue cat. She has described herself as an unsolved mystery enthusiast, which fits, and she still seems happiest when a story gives her room to chase one more dark question.
