Jungle War Books in Order

The Jungle War series follows Charlie Torrance through the British retreat in Southeast Asia during World War II. It begins in Malaya in 1942, where Torrance is a private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. A posting that once seemed remote and uneventful becomes a fight to stay alive after the Japanese invasion.

Torrance is not presented as a polished war hero. He is resourceful, impulsive, and willing to bend rules when the alternative is getting killed. That makes him useful in a crisis, but it also gets him into trouble. Across the series, he is thrown together with soldiers from different units and backgrounds, and must decide who can be trusted when military order is breaking down.

The jungle is never just scenery.

In Blitz in Malaya, Torrance's group finds documents that make them a target for a determined Japanese officer. Escape from Singapore moves the story into the chaos of the island's fall, where Torrance and his companions are caught up in a desperate mission to extract a British operative with secret information. The danger comes as much from confusion, shortages, and bad intelligence as it does from gunfire.

The final book, Betrayal in Burma, finds Torrance serving as a corporal during the retreat toward India. He is given command of a squad of defaulters and ordered to escort a political prisoner, while a Japanese agent and Burmese independence fighters work to free that man. Suspicion inside Torrance's own group makes the assignment even more dangerous.

These are military adventures with a close, ground-level view of the campaign. The settings include rubber plantations, jungle tracks, battered towns, prisoner-of-war fears, and retreating columns. The books keep returning to the physical strain of heat, rain, insects, hunger, exhaustion, and trying to move before an enemy closes in.

The tone is hard-edged and fast-paced, with room for gallows humor and squaddie banter. Start with Blitz in Malaya to meet Torrance at the beginning of the invasion, then continue through Escape from Singapore and Betrayal in Burma for one connected story of retreat, duty, and survival.
