Author bio

Julianne MacLean is a Canadian novelist who has spent her career moving between sweeping historical romance and emotionally twisty women's fiction. Readers often find her through one side of that work, then end up staying for both.

She studied English literature at the University of King's College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Around that time, she fell deeply for classic love stories like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Pride and Prejudice, books that helped shape her feel for longing, conflict, and big romantic payoffs.

But writing was not her first full-time job.

After college, MacLean went back to school, earned a business administration degree with a major in accounting from Acadia University, and worked at the Office of the Auditor General. It is a practical beginning for a novelist, which is part of what makes her path interesting. She has said it took six years, four unsold manuscripts, and a lot of persistence before she finally sold a book.

That first sale was Prairie Bride, bought in 1999 and published in 2000. From there she built a historical romance backlist that includes To Marry the Duke, Captured by the Highlander, and Love According to Lily. Her early books often place smart, stubborn women inside worlds ruled by class, inheritance, clan loyalties, or reputation, then let love make a glorious mess of everyone's plans.

Then she changed lanes.

With The Color of Heaven, MacLean opened up a different side of her writing. The book launched a long-running series of contemporary novels that mix family secrets, near-death experiences, second chances, and a touch of the unexplained. Later standalones like A Curve in the Road, These Tangled Vines, Beyond the Moonlit Sea, and A Storm of Infinite Beauty kept that emotional pull while widening the settings to places like Nova Scotia, Tuscany, and the Bermuda Triangle.

That range is a big part of her appeal. Some readers come for the Scottish warriors, ballroom politics, and marriage bargains. Others come for women at crossroads, old griefs that will not stay buried, and the quiet possibility that life may be stranger, kinder, or more connected than it first appears.

She has the numbers to back up a long career. MacLean is a USA Today bestselling author, a four-time RITA finalist, and the winner of several romance awards, including a Reviewers' Choice Award for Love According to Lily. Her books have sold millions of copies and have been translated into more than a dozen languages. These Tangled Vines was also optioned for film.

There is some fun real-life texture behind the work, too. During her university years, she worked as a DJ in Halifax clubs, spinning 80s dance music on Saturday nights. She has also lived in New Zealand and England, which fits neatly with a writer who seems to enjoy big feelings, fresh scenery, and characters who are a little displaced from home.

These days, MacLean lives on the east coast of Canada in a lakeside home with her husband and her mother. She still writes the kind of books that balance romance with upheaval, and heartbreak with hope. Whether she is sending readers to a Highland castle, a London ballroom, a snowy roadside, or a vineyard in Italy, she tends to ask the same question: what happens when love arrives at exactly the wrong time, and still refuses to leave?
