Julia Dahl Books in Order

Julia Dahl was born and raised in Fresno, California. In 1994, she found her way onto her high school newspaper staff and started chasing stories, a habit that would shape both her reporting career and her fiction.

She went east for college at Yale, then continued studying writing and journalism. Dahl earned a master's degree in creative writing from The New School and a master's degree in journalism from American University. The mix makes sense when you read her work: her novels are built around big questions, close observation, and the stubborn work of finding out what happened.

Before publishing fiction, Dahl worked across several corners of the news business. Her jobs have included freelance reporting for the New York Post, editing at Marie Claire, serving as deputy managing editor of The Crime Report, and covering crime and justice for CBS News. Her articles have also appeared in magazines and news outlets covering culture, media, and public life.

She knows how a reporter thinks when a story won't let go.

Dahl's first novel, Invisible City, arrived in 2014 and introduced Rebekah Roberts, a young New York tabloid reporter investigating the murder of a Hasidic woman in Brooklyn. Rebekah is also searching for a better understanding of the mother who left her as a baby. The book became the first in a three-part series, followed by Run You Down and Conviction. Invisible City was a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best First Novel and won the Barry, Shamus, and Macavity awards in that category.

The later books widen Dahl's range without losing her interest in secrets, crime, family, and the way institutions can close ranks. The Missing Hours follows an NYU student after a violent night changes her life, while I Dreamed of Falling centers on a local reporter in the Hudson Valley after his partner is found dead. Readers often come to Dahl for the suspense, then stay with the complicated people caught inside the mystery.

The crime is only the beginning.

Her stories tend to put people at the edge of communities that have their own rules: a close-knit religious neighborhood, a college campus, a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. She writes about mothers and children, old wounds, class, belonging, and the gap between the story people tell in public and the truth they keep private. The investigations move forward, but so do questions about loyalty and who gets believed.

After spending two decades in New York City, Dahl moved to the Hudson Valley with her husband and son. She teaches journalism and advises students at NYU, while also working with writers through editing, coaching, and fiction classes. It is a fitting second act for someone who has spent years asking good questions, on the page and off.
