Author bio
Judy Nunn is one of Australia’s most beloved storytellers. Her career is a fascinating journey that has spanned the stage, the television screen, and the printed page. While many authors struggle to find an audience, Judy has managed to conquer two completely different industries. Before she was topping bestseller lists, she was already a household name in entertainment.
Born in Perth, Judy initially found fame as an actress. Her face became familiar to millions of Australians through her roles in some of the country's most iconic television productions. She starred in the scandalous drama The Box and the gritty, cult-favourite series Prisoner. However, her most enduring role was undoubtedly that of Ailsa Stewart in Home and Away. For many years, she was a fixture in living rooms across the nation, earning a place in television history.
But Judy had more stories to tell than just the ones in her scripts. In fact, her writing career began while she was still spending long days on set. She started out writing scripts for television and radio, a discipline that taught her the importance of sharp dialogue and strong pacing. It wasn't long before she decided to try her hand at full-length fiction.
Her literary journey began close to home. Her first three novels—The Glitter Game, Centre Stage, and Araluen—were inspired directly by her life in the performing arts. These books drew from her personal experiences, offering readers a fun and dramatic glimpse behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.
Eventually, Judy pivoted to the genre that has made her a publishing phenomenon: historical fiction. She began writing what are often described as "Australian blockbusters." These novels are sweeping sagas that blend fast-paced adventure with real history. She has a special talent for weaving fictional characters into the fabric of true events, making history feel alive and immediate rather than dry and academic.
Her dedication to accuracy is a huge part of her success. Judy believes in getting her hands dirty during the research process. She travels extensively to the locations she writes about, soaking up the atmosphere and speaking with locals. Whether she is describing the lush, tropical environment of the Top End or the red dust of the Pilbara, you can tell she has been there.
Her books often tackle major, defining moments in the country's past. For instance, in Heritage, she explored the complex history of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. In Maralinga, she dove into the dark chapter of British nuclear testing in the outback. Readers love her ability to educate them about Australia's heritage without the story ever feeling like a lecture.
In recognition of her incredible dual career, Judy was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015. The award honoured her significant services to both the performing arts and literature.
These days, she continues to craft her stories from the New South Wales Central Coast. She lives there with her husband, Bruce Venables, who is also a well-known author and actor. Even after decades in the spotlight, Judy Nunn remains a vital and energetic voice in Australian storytelling.
