Author bio
Judith Gould was the shared pen name of two writers, Nicholas Peter "Nick" Bienes and William Rhea Gallaher Jr. Together, they created big, fast-moving novels about money, family, betrayal, romance, and women who refuse to stay powerless.
Bienes was born in Leoben, Austria, and spent his early years moving between Austria, Yugoslavia, Germany, and the United States. He later worked in technical software publishing in New York before turning to freelance writing. His interest in European settings, old art, luxury, and international travel often found its way into the novels.
Gallaher grew up in Harriman, Tennessee, near Knoxville. He studied at the University of Tennessee, earned a master's degree, taught for a time, and eventually headed to New York. There he worked as a magazine copy editor and wrote short pieces for giveaway publications, all while trying to find a path toward the kind of long, absorbing fiction he loved as a reader.
The right partnership changed everything.
A friend introduced Gallaher to Bienes, and their first collaboration became Sins, published in 1982. The novel follows Hélène Junot, whose childhood in Nazi-occupied France leaves her determined to build power and settle old scores. Its mix of fashion, publishing, revenge, danger, and romance set the pattern for much of the work that followed. A 1986 television miniseries starring Joan Collins brought the story to an even wider audience.
The pair kept returning to women whose personal lives collide with demanding careers and public success. Never Too Rich heads into the fashion world, while The LoveMakers books follow the Hale family's hotel business across generations. In The Greek Villa, a young writer is drawn into a movie star's secrets on Santorini. The Parisian Affair sends a jewelry designer to Paris with a priceless emerald and too many people hunting for it.
Their stories favor grand houses, luxury hotels, boardrooms, galleries, cruise ships, and faraway cities. But the engine is usually personal: a woman rebuilding after loss, a family secret that will not stay buried, an inheritance with strings attached, or a romance made difficult by ambition and danger. The books often move quickly between glamorous settings and high-pressure confrontations.
They also had a strong sense of place in their own lives. Bienes and Gallaher lived for years at New York's Hotel Chelsea, then made a home in the Hudson River Valley. They spent time in Greece, both for research and for the pleasure of being there, which helps explain the recurring Greek settings in their later novels. Bienes died in 2012, and Gallaher died in 2025.
One catalog wrinkle is worth knowing. Books such as Four Square Writing Method and Writing Workouts That Work belong to Judith S. Gould, an education author whose similarly named work is sometimes grouped with the Judith Gould novels. The romance and suspense fiction was the work of Bienes and Gallaher.
