Author bio
J.T. Brannan was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and he has said that writing was the plan from very early on. As a boy he was a big reader, and that mix of adventure, suspense, and sheer story momentum never really left him.
Before writing became his full-time job, he trained as a British Army officer at Sandhurst. He also worked as a doorman, became a national karate champion, and built a life around martial arts and discipline. Those experiences matter, because when Brannan writes about pressure, violence, fear, or the split-second choices people make in bad situations, the scenes usually feel practical rather than flashy.
It shows.
His books tend to move fast, but they are built on clear setups. In the Mark Cole novels, beginning with Stop at Nothing, he writes geopolitical thrillers about covert action, intelligence work, and the cost of serving a system that can turn on its own people. In the Colt Ryder books, starting with The Thousand Dollar Man, he shifts into a more stripped-back kind of action story, following a wandering veteran who takes jobs for a flat fee and steps into trouble all over America.
That range is a big part of his appeal.
Brannan has also written globe-hopping rescue adventures in the John Lee books, published under the The Extractor banner, and darker crime fiction in the Maxwell Knight novels. Then there are the standalones. Origin helped bring him to a wider audience with its icy science thriller setup and conspiracy plot, and Extinction followed with another high-concept story that mixes action with big existential stakes. Readers who like him usually come back for the same reasons each time, strong forward motion, capable protagonists, and plots that know exactly what kind of ride they want to be.
He has spoken about loving thrillers as a young reader, especially books with scale, danger, and momentum. You can feel that in his fiction. Whether he is writing about a black-ops assassin, a missing child, a rescue team in the wilderness, or a drifter with a dog and a thousand-dollar calling card, he tends to keep the story clear and the stakes immediate.
His settings do a lot of work too. Some books stay close to the ground in small towns and back roads. Others go wide, across battle zones, frozen landscapes, government corridors, and international flashpoints. The common thread is pressure. His characters are usually pushed hard, physically, morally, or both, and the books are interested in what happens when duty, survival, and justice stop lining up neatly.
Brannan now writes full-time and teaches martial arts in Harrogate, in North Yorkshire. He has also continued serving in the British Army Reserves. That mix of writing desk and training floor seems to suit him, and it fits the books as well, thoughtful enough to build a solid thriller, practical enough to keep it moving.
If you pick up one of his series, you will get a good sense of what he does best very quickly. He likes high stakes, clear missions, tough choices, and characters who keep going when stopping would be easier.
