Series background & context

This group gathers the Greg Rucka stories tied directly to the road toward The Force Awakens. They are not all doing the same job, which is part of what makes them work. One fills in history after the original trilogy, one follows Han Solo and Chewbacca on a stand-alone mission, and one steps into the lives of Finn, Rey, and Poe before the film brings them together.

Shattered Empire is the broadest of the bunch. It lives in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi, when the Empire is breaking apart but the galaxy is still unstable and dangerous. It gives the sense that history does not reset just because one battle is won. There is cleanup, grief, confusion, and a lot still at stake.

Smuggler's Run goes smaller and more direct. Han and Chewie take on a mission for the Rebellion between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, which means the story gets to lean into speed, improvisation, and that classic scoundrel energy. Then Before the Awakening shifts again, using three separate stories to show where Finn, Rey, and Poe are emotionally before the movie starts.

What links all three is clarity. Rucka writes them so newer readers can follow along, but he also gives longtime fans enough texture to enjoy the gaps being filled in. These are bridge stories, yes, but they do not feel like homework.

They are best read as character pieces around a major movie moment. The galaxy is changing, and these books show the people standing right on that line.
