Series background & context

Josie Strong is a very different kind of thriller lead. At the start of the series she is a medieval history professor at UCLA, a single mother, and, by her own lights, not an action hero. She and her fourteen-year-old daughter Samantha live in Santa Monica and have a solid, ordinary routine until Wilderness Vacation tears through it. Once a crime makes powerful men want them dead, Josie has to turn scholarship into survival.

That is where the series finds its hook.

What makes Josie interesting is that her expertise turns out to be surprisingly practical. She teaches medieval weapons, tactics, and siege thinking, so when modern killers corner her in remote country, she starts reading the landscape like a battlefield. She is not the biggest person in the room, and she is usually outgunned. Her edge is preparation, improvisation, and the ability to use ordinary materials in very old ways. Borg plays that contrast well. Josie is a professor, not a super-soldier, but she is smart, stubborn, and willing to adapt fast.

The books also make real space for Samantha, which matters. This is not a lone wolf series. Samantha is bright, brave, and deeply tied to every choice Josie makes. Their relationship gives the novels more heart than the premise alone might suggest. When the danger rises, they are not just trying to solve a crime or outlast a chase. They are trying to keep their small family intact, and that keeps the stakes personal even when the plot gets big.

Each book drops them into a different stretch of hostile terrain. Wilderness Vacation heads into the Quetico wilderness of Ontario by canoe. Wilderness Justice pushes Josie toward Yosemite after Samantha is framed. Wilderness Punishment brings them into a Lake Tahoe case involving a sniper, and Wilderness Threat raises the scale again with a kidnapping, a drug gang, and a fortified abbey. Across the series, wilderness is never just a backdrop. It is pressure, exposure, and strategy.

The tone is darker and more relentless than the Owen McKenna books. Josie is often forced into action by blackmail, corruption, or official power she does not trust. But Borg keeps the stories grounded because Josie thinks like a teacher and worries like a parent. Later books widen the cast with useful allies, including a gifted former student who can help with tech and tracking, yet the center stays the same, a mother and daughter trying to stay one move ahead.

Best of all, the series never forgets what makes it different. These are suspense novels about a scholar who keeps having to prove that knowledge counts in a fight. If you like smart survival thrillers, strong mother-daughter dynamics, and improvised plans under impossible pressure, Josie Strong has a clear pull from page one. Start with Wilderness Vacation and keep going in order.
