Author bio
Jordan Rivet grew up in Arizona and now lives in Hong Kong with her husband. She writes young adult fantasy and science fiction, usually with determined heroines, vivid settings, and the kind of missions that get bigger the longer the story goes.
Adventure seems to be her default setting.
Before fiction took over, she planned to become a book editor. After moving from Arizona to Hong Kong in 2010, she started writing more seriously, first in nonfiction and then in the invented worlds that became her real home on the page. She worked on Seabound from 2012 and, in 2014, left her day job so she could focus on publishing fiction under the Jordan Rivet name.
She has also shared where the pen name came from. Jordan was partly a nod to Robert Jordan, one of the fantasy writers she grew up reading with her family. Rivet fit the metal-and-machinery feel of Seabound, her first series under that name, and it gave her a distinct identity for her fiction.
Her first big fictional world was an apocalyptic one. Seabound drops readers onto a cruise ship carrying survivors after disaster strikes the planet, and its heroine, Esther, is a teen mechanic trying to keep her floating home alive. Wake Me After the Apocalypse pushes the survival angle even harder, opening with Joanna Murphy waking from cryosleep to a bunker full of bones.
Her fantasy books move just as fast, but in different clothes. Duel of Fire pairs a serious duelist with an infuriating prince in the mountaintop kingdom of Vertigon. The Spy in the Silver Palace follows a shapeshifting spy who gets pulled from palace gossip into real political danger. Curse Painter builds a whole adventure around art magic, outlaw missions, and a heroine trying to outrun the family business that taught her how to curse.
Then there is Replacement, which shows another side of her work. It starts with a leftover clone taking the place of a dead girl and turns into a dystopian mystery about identity, loyalty, and who gets to control a life. Across her books, Rivet keeps returning to young women who want freedom, answers, or a place to belong, and who usually have to make a mess before they can make things right.
She grew up reading fantasy, especially long, immersive series, and that influence is easy to spot. Her books like maps, unusual magic systems, secretive institutions, and settings with their own rules. But they also stay grounded in practical things, work, family, trust, and the cost of protecting other people.
The range of her series is part of the appeal. Steel and Fire and The Fire Queen's Apprentice lean into swords, dragons, and elemental magic. Empire of Talents brings court intrigue and complicated female friendship. The Bunker books and the Lost Clone series carry that same forward rush into science fiction, with cryosleep, bunkers, elite schools, clones, and the politics of survival.
She kept going.
By 2016, she had turned writing into her full-time work. Since then she has built multiple connected fantasy and science fiction series, and Curse Painter has been translated into Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Italian. From Hong Kong, she keeps writing brisk, high-stakes stories for readers who like action, heart, and heroines with a plan, even when the plan goes sideways.
