Jonathan Dyer Books in Order

Jonathan Dyer grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. Long before he was publishing thrillers and true crime, he joined the Army in 1981 and went into military intelligence. He studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, then continued with cryptologic training before heading overseas.

From 1983 to 1986 he served at Field Station Berlin, working on Teufelsberg as a SIGINT intercept operator and transcriber. His job was to monitor Soviet military activity in what was then West Berlin. If his fiction feels unusually comfortable with the machinery of Cold War espionage, that background is a big reason why.

Berlin clearly stayed with him.

While stationed there, he married fellow Russian linguist Kerry Kaye Dyer. After leaving the Army, he studied law at UC Davis, practiced law for years, and later taught Government, U.S. History, and Criminal Law. He has said that he started writing more than 30 years ago, in a pre-social-media world, leaning on memory, reading, and lived experience rather than an endless stream of online advice.

That mix of careers matters. The legal training shows up in his interest in motive, consequence, and institutional pressure, while the teaching background helps keep the history in his books clear and readable. Even when a plot gets complicated, he tends to keep the stakes plain.

His first published novel was Dancing with Patience in 2000, but many readers know him best for the Nick Temple books, starting with Switchback. That series follows CIA officer Nick Temple through Berlin, Crete, the Caribbean, and other Cold War flashpoints. Books like The Heraklion Gambit, Silent Vector, and The Heidelberg Gap mix tradecraft, political tension, and the feeling that history can turn on one bad decision.

Nick Temple is where Dyer's military past and storyteller instincts meet.

He has never stayed in one lane. The Holy Lance pushes his espionage interests into a modern conspiracy thriller with Russian imperial ambition at its center, while Let Me Explain turns inward and follows Harry Taft through prep-school chaos, first love, and the rough edges of growing up. Judging Paradise is shorter and darker, a compressed novella set over a single day on a fictional Caribbean island. In 2025 he added book-length nonfiction with Greg Scarpa, Legendary Evil, a deeply researched biography of the Mafia killer and longtime FBI informant.

Readers who come for the spy material often stay for the sense of place. Berlin is the big one, but Dyer also likes border zones, islands, classrooms, offices, and pressure-cooker situations where people have to decide what they owe to country, family, or themselves. Across genres, he returns again and again to loyalty, betrayal, and the cost of living inside systems larger than any one person.

Dyer and his wife spent more than 30 years in California's wine country before retiring in 2021 to the hill country north of Austin, Texas, closer to family. He has kept writing in retirement. In a January 1, 2026 post, he said he was at work on Nonessential Personnel, planned as the seventh Nick Temple novel.
