John Rector Books in Order

John Rector is a Colorado native who lives in Omaha, Nebraska. He writes dark standalone thrillers, often about ordinary people who make one terrible choice and then find that the consequences keep getting worse.

His route into fiction was not carefully planned. Rector had been a musician since childhood, but after moving from Denver to Omaha in his late twenties, he felt burnt out on that life and wanted to try something new.

A road trip back to Colorado helped set things in motion. He picked up the audiobook of Stephen King’s On Writing, and the idea that writing might be something he could actually do began to stick.

Short fiction came first. Rector has described stories as a useful training ground because they demand focus: every line needs to reveal character, build tension, or move the plot along. His short work has appeared in magazines and earned several awards, including the 2013 International Thriller Award for Lost Things.

His early novels quickly established the kind of trouble readers can expect. The Grove, first published in 2009, follows troubled farmer Dexter McCray after he wakes from a blackout and finds a dead girl on his land. In The Cold Kiss, a young couple on the run makes a disastrous decision after a stranger dies in their car during a blizzard.

The stories are lean, tense, and often built around people with too little money, too few options, and a lot to hide. Rector likes characters who try to leave old lives behind, only to discover that the past has a stubborn way of catching up.

That pattern drives Already Gone, in which Jake Reese’s violent past resurfaces after an attack and his wife’s disappearance. Out of the Black puts grieving father Matt Caine under pressure from debt, grief, and a custody fight, leading him toward a kidnapping plan that can only make things worse.

He also enjoys changing the shape of the threat. Ruthless is a fast-moving crime story about a man mistaken for a hit man, while The Ridge heads into stranger territory, placing a suspicious newcomer in a planned community dominated by a research institute.

Broken returns to the kind of isolated setting that suits Rector well: a decaying coastal tourist town, an estranged twin’s death, and a survivor trying to learn what really happened. Across the books, the pace is brisk, the situations are messy, and safety is usually an illusion.

Rector continues to make his home in Omaha. His novels are a good fit for readers who like noir-tinged suspense, flawed people, and plots where one bad decision opens the door to several more.
