Author bio

John A. Russo grew up in western Pennsylvania, in and around the steel-town communities south of Pittsburgh. He was born in Clarion, Pennsylvania, attended West Virginia University, and later returned from a two-year Army stint to join friends in the Pittsburgh commercial-film world.

That return changed his life.

Russo joined George A. Romero, Russell Streiner, and others at The Latent Image, a small production company making commercials. The group wanted to make a feature on a shoestring. Russo brought in an idea involving corpses coming back to life and feeding on the living. Romero developed it further, and the friends built a story together that became Night of the Living Dead in 1968.

Russo co-wrote the screenplay, helped produce the film, and even appeared in it. The black-and-white independent movie was made around Pittsburgh with local talent, borrowed locations, practical effects, and a stubborn willingness to figure things out as they went. Its success gave Russo a long-running connection to horror, but it also set up the practical, make-it-work approach that runs through the rest of his career.

He turned the film into the 1974 novel Night of the Living Dead, then continued his own branch of the story with Return of the Living Dead. His zombie books tend to treat the undead as a crisis that exposes what people do under pressure. Police officers, families, scientists, teenagers, and ordinary people have to make bad choices quickly, usually while the situation gets worse.

But zombies are only part of the job.

Russo wrote a steady run of paperback horror novels including The Majorettes, Midnight, Limb to Limb, The Awakening, Day Care, Inhuman, Voodoo Dawn, and Living Things. These are direct, plot-first stories, often centered on small communities, frightened young people, secretive institutions, cults, killers, or a menace that gets loose before anyone understands it. Several became films or were tied closely to film projects.

His work has often moved back and forth between page and screen. Russo wrote, directed, produced, and acted in independent movies, including Midnight, Santa Claws, and My Uncle John Is a Zombie!. He also worked on later Night of the Living Dead releases and related projects, staying closely involved with the world that began in rural Pennsylvania in 1968.

He also likes explaining how movies get made.

Books such as Making Movies, Scare Tactics, The Filmmaker's Guide to Producing Low Budget Independent Motion Pictures, and How to Make and Market Your Own Feature Movie for $10,000 or Less draw on his experience in independent production. They focus on the nuts and bolts, from shaping a script and planning a shoot to getting a finished feature in front of an audience. Russo has also taught filmmaking, sharing the kind of hands-on knowledge that comes from making films outside the studio system.

In later years, he continued writing horror, suspense, historical thrillers, and books connected to his film career. Titles such as Epidemic of the Living Dead, The Unearthly, The Darkest Web, and The Night They Came Home show how broad his interests remain. Through it all, Pittsburgh and low-budget filmmaking have stayed close to the center of his story.
