Author bio

Joe Wicks is a British fitness coach, cookbook writer and children's author who turned short social media videos into a global brand. Known as The Body Coach, he mixes quick home workouts with simple recipes that help people eat well without overthinking nutrition. His upbeat style made him a familiar face long before his books hit the top of the charts.

Joe was born Joseph Trevor Wicks on 21 September 1985 in Epsom, Surrey, and grew up on a council estate with two brothers. Money was tight and family life was often chaotic, so sport quickly became his outlet and his way of feeling in control.

At school he gravitated toward PE lessons and any chance to move. After studying sports science at St Mary's University in Twickenham, he worked as a teaching assistant and cover supervisor, helping out in school PE departments. Those early jobs showed him that coaching suited his energy and gave him a direct way to encourage kids who might otherwise switch off.

In his twenties he shifted into personal training, running boot camps in London parks and handing out flyers to drum up interest. Some mornings nobody came, but he kept showing up and learned how to read what real people needed from a coach. In 2014 he started posting 15 second recipe videos and workout clips online as The Body Coach, signing them with the hashtag #Leanin15.

The response to those clips led to his first cookbook, Lean in 15: 15-Minute Meals and Workouts, which paired fast, protein focused recipes with high intensity interval training sessions you could do in a small space. Follow ups like Lean in 15 - The Shape Plan and Lean in 15 - The Sustain Plan built out the idea into a simple system that felt less like dieting and more like a way of living. Later books such as Veggie Lean in 15, The Fat Loss Plan, Joe's Family Food and Feel Good Food shifted the focus to meat free cooking, family meals and how food affects mood and energy across a whole day.

When the COVID 19 pandemic closed schools in 2020, Joe began hosting free daily 'PE with Joe' workouts from his living room, inviting families around the world to join in. At its peak nearly a million people tuned in live for a single session, and the series raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. That burst of activity earned him a Guinness World Record and an MBE for services to fitness and to children during lockdown.

His work has since grown beyond cookbooks and workouts. He has fronted television series and documentaries about exercise and mental health, and created the Burpee Bears picture books, which weave simple stories, exercises and recipes together so young children can move and read alongside their families.

Joe married model Rosie Jones in 2019, and they now have four children together, splitting their time between the UK and periods in California. He often talks about how his tough childhood shapes the kind of parent he is trying to be, and how movement still helps him manage stress. Recent projects like Wean in 15, 30 Day Kick Start Plan and Feel Good in 15 keep circling back to the same idea, that small, consistent choices around food, sleep and exercise can make everyday life feel lighter.
